The Cougars boys’ varsity basketball team won last Tuesday at home against Tunstall with a score of 47-35.
DeAndre Reynolds hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the first quarter and both Darius Hagwood and DeShawn Penn scored on fast breaks to give the Cougars a 14-7 lead.
The second quarter started with a bang as Jay Penn hit three back to back 3-pointers to make it a 23-9 advantage; by halftime, the Cougars were in control, leading 25-11.
Reynolds started the third quarter with long 3-pointers to make it 28-13, and then layups by Hagwood and Josh Cockram had the Cougars up 32-17. A late 3-pointer by Penn made the score 35-20 going into the final quarter.
Garrett Worley and Reynolds both hit 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter that made the score 41-24 and basically put the game out of reach. Reynolds finished with a game-high 14 points while Jay Penn added 12 points—all on 3-pointers. DeShawn Penn had a team high 8 rebounds.
After the game, Reynolds said that game was like the season that the Cougars had “started slow” but was now “hungry.” He also said the team was playing their best ball this season. The Cougars are 5-10 for the season but have won three of their last four games.
The Cougars will host Bassett on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
The JV team also played Tunstall last week, but lost 55-42. he team was tied at halftime but got outscored 19-4 in the third quarter. Lane Taylor had a team-high 10 points for the Cougars.
