The Patrick County Lady Cougars varsity softball team traveled to Franklin County on Tuesday and lost the game 5-2.
The Cougars scored both of their runs in the second inning. Josie Pendleton reached base first with a walk. Sydney Biggs batted next, bunting the ball and reaching base off of an error. A few batters later, Morgan Biggs singled, bringing in Pendleton and Sydney. The Cougars could not execute for the remainder of the game, despite having opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings.
Morgan Biggs finished the game with two RBIs off of three hits, including a double. Makenzie Watts ended with 2 hits.
Hannah Beasley went to work first for the Cougars in the circle, going 3 1/3 innings. Beasley gave up four hits and allowed two runs. Katherine Beckett relieved her and finished the game allowing three hits and three runs.
The Cougars hosted Magna Vista on Thursday, and after a scoreless first three innings, Morgan Biggs stirred things up with a single. Makenzie Watts then reached base by a fielder’s choice that retired Biggs at second. After stealing second on the first pitch, Watts came home thanks to a single by Brooklyn Caviness, getting the Cougars’ first run on the board.
A couple batters later, Josie Pendleton recorded a huge double, bringing in Caviness and Danielle King for two more Cougar runs. After going three up and three down in the fifth inning, Watts provided some insurance with a single, later scoring on a double from Danielle King. Pendleton sent the ball down the right field line to bring in a hustling King for the score. The Cougars cruised to a 5-2 win.
Pendleton recorded three RBIs off of two hits. King finished with two runs and an RBI. Watts added two more runs.
Hannah Beasley started pitching for Patrick County and gave up two hits and two runs. Those two hits would be the only hits for Magna Vista that night, thanks to superb defense shutting the Lady Warriors down. Katherine Beckett relieved Beasley at the top of the third, and recorded four strikeouts.
Patrick County will host Bassett Thursday at 5 p.m. The matchup will mark the Lady Cougar’s senior night game.
