The Patrick County High School boys’ basketball team wrapped up its season last Wednesday with a win over Tunstall High School. The score was 67-47. Last Tuesday, the Cougars fell to Halifax 54-46.
The Cougars will begin tournament action Friday; the location nor the team had been decided at press time.
In Tuesday’s loss to Halifax, the Cougars took an early 12-7 lead in the first period. They held a two-point lead at the half—22-20. Even in the third quarter, PC led 35-31; however, in the fourth period, the Comets took advantage of fouls by the Cougars to amass 11 points on free throws to move ahead.
The Cougars scored only 11 points in the final period, while the Comets added only seven from shots from the floor plus the 11 of 13 free throws.
DeAndre Reynolds was high scorer for the Cougars with 17. Brandon Hubbard added 10.
Wednesday’s final regular season game saw the Cougars play even ball with the Trojans for most of the first half, leaving the score at 26-25 in favor of the Cougars.
Play continued on an even keel until the final quarter when the Cougars took advantage of the fouling Trojans and added 11 free throws out of 12 to move ahead and win 67-47.
The Cougar defense held Tunstall to only nine points in the final period. Brandon Hubbard was eight for eight on free throws in the last period, half of his total 16 points in the game.
Hunter Lawless also scored 16 points, including three three-pointers. Darius Hagwood added 15.
Patrick County’s record for the season is 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the Piedmont District.
