After solid performances at 3A Regionals, the Patrick County High School indoor track team will be sending six Cougars to the 3A State meet this weekend in Roanoke.
Lexy Carico placed seventh in the shot put, but thanks to her stellar efforts earlier in the season, will advance to states after throwing the automatic qualifying mark.
Running without senior Savannah Moorefield, the girls 4×800 (Arielle Taylor, Armonte Carter, Macie Rogers, Montana Moorefield) ran a strong race to place fourth.
The girls 4×400 team (Erin Vernon, Armonte Carter, Macie Rogers, Montana Moorefield) battled to an eighth place finish. That team previously ran the automatic qualifying time, and have earned their place at the state meet.
Juan Cisneros continued his strong senior season, running to a third place finish in the 1,000.
The boys 4×400 (Gonzalo Vargas, Juan Cisneros, Tommy Pauley, and Burke Gonzalez) absolutely ran their hearts out to place seventh. While they missed qualifying for states by one place, they set a new school record by more than a second, running 3:40.9. “Those guys did everything they could, and we could not have been more proud of their effort.
“Coming so close to the state meet will definitely add fuel to their fire for future seasons,” said Coach Danel Slaydon. “We are eagerly looking forward to competing this weekend, and are confident that our Cougars will bring their best,” he added.
