The Varsity Cougar Baseball team is still waiting for a break.
Floyd County took an early lead on Patrick County, but the Cougars weren’t going down easily.
The Cougars scored one in the top of the 1st and gave up three in the bottom and then scratched all afternoon to stay in the game. Patrick County was down 4-5 going into the 7th. In the 8th inning both teams went down quietly. It was at that point the umpires decided to call the game.
Jacob Mullis led off the inning, with a 9 pitch at bat and singled to right. Mullis stole second and scored the game tying run on a single up the middle from Taylor Swails, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the 9th, the Cougars broke it open scoring three runs thanks in part to an RBI single by Colby Vernon. The Cougars were up 8-5 with two outs and runners on second and third when the umpires called the game for darkness. In this case, the game falls back to the score at the end of the previous inning, ending the game in a 5-5 tie.
Josh Cockram got the start on the mound and went a strong for 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, three earned on seven hits, and striking out four while giving up three walks.
He was relieved by Kelon Penn who went 2 2/3 innings, allowing only one runner and a hit batsman. Penn struck out four. The Cougars were led at the plate by Josh Cockram going 3-6 and scoring 3 runs. Colby Vernon, Kelon Penn, Lane Taylor, Taylor Swails, Bryson Fulcher, and Jacob Mullis all added a hit.
