A Stuart man is in custody following an altercation with a Patrick County Sheriff’s Deputy, according to a release from Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
Michael Paul McAdams, 29, was arrested on Friday, November 8, in connection with the incident. He was charged with obstruction of justice by force, assault on a law enforcement officer, destruction of property, and interfering with the property rights of another, according to Smith.
The incident began at 6:05 a.m. when the Patrick County 911 Communications Center received a call to report a suspicious man outside of the caller’s home on Spring Road in Patrick Springs.
Senior Deputy Noah Wolfe responded and found a man allegedly trying to force his way into the basement of the home. Wolfe attempted to take the man into custody, at which time the man allegedly resisted, and a physical struggle ensued.
Wolfe’s collar bone was broken during the physical altercation when both he and the man fell to the ground, the sheriff said. Wolfe was able to keep the man pinned to the ground during the struggle until Senior Deputy Doug Perry arrived at the scene and was able to handcuff the suspect.
Wolfe was treated at SOVAH Hospital in Martinsville and was released on Friday afternoon, Smith said, adding that Wolfe faces a minimum 6-to-8-week recovery.
“At this point, we are hoping that surgery can be avoided, and we are grateful that it wasn’t worse,” Smith said. “Sadly, officers are killed weekly across our nation in scenarios identical to this.”
McAdams is being held in the Patrick County jail without bond.
