Dewey Leon Newman, 95, was born June 7, 1921, in Stuart, to Patti Jane Wimbush Newman and Samuel Arthur Newman, both deceased. He attended Big A elementary school until seven years old and graduated from Martinsville High School in 1940.
After enlisting in January, 1942, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army for four and a half years, with two and a half years in the South Pacific on numerous islands with combat in Negros, Philippine Islands.
He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1949 from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware in 1956. He was first employed by Richmond Engineering, Richmond, then by the duPont Co. of Wilmington, Del., until retirement.
His current residence was at Warm Hearth Village, Blacksburg. He was a member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Haynes Newman; children, Art Newman of Dunedin, Fla., Scott Newman of Silver Spring, Md.; Stuart Newman of Cincinnati, Oh., Nancy Newman of Abingdon, Md.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Frances Newman Davis of Martinsville.
As an elder at Head of Christiana Church in Elkton, Md., he was active in developing and maintaining a home for homeless men.
Family would like to express special thanks to the staff at the VA Medical Center in Salem for the caring attention given him while there.
Memorial donations may be made to Baptist Church and cemetery, 2381 Big A School Road, Stuart, Va., 24171; and Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, 701 Church Street SE, Blacksburg, Va., 24060-5213.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg with a reception following. A graveside service was held in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville.
