Patrick County voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 6 to cast a ballot in the General and Special Elections and consider two proposed constitutional amendments.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sample ballots are included in this week’s edition showing the names of the candidates. (Page three)
Corey A. Stewart, a republican, and Matt J. Waters, libertarian, are seeking to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Timothy M. Kaine, a democrat.
In the 9th District race, Anthony Flaccavento, a democrat from Abingdon, hopes to best incumbent U.S. Rep. H. Morgan Griffith, a republican from Salem.
Three candidates vying for three seats on the Stuart Town Council: Rebecca J. Adcock, Terry W. Dalton and Harold Dean Goad.
The first proposed constitutional amendment is to determine whether a county, city or town should be authorized to provide a partial tax exemption for real property that is subject to recurrent flooding if flooding improvements were made to the property.
The second proposal is to determine if the real property tax exemption for a primary residence currently provided to the surviving spouses of veterans who had a 100 percent service-connected, permanent and total disability should be amended to allow the surviving spouse to move to a different primary residence and still claim the exemption.
Susan Taylor, registrar, said that there are 12,066 registered voters in Patrick County.
While she is unsure of the turnout, Taylor estimated that 40 percent of voters turnout for midterm elections. She hopes for a higher percentage.
Taylor also issued a reminder that voters in the former Stuart Administration Precinct now will vote at the new, Stuart fairgrounds Precinct, located in the Hooker Building, Rotary Field, 420 Woodland Drive.
Voters are reminded to bring an acceptable form of identification with them. Virginia law requires that all voters present an acceptable form of identification when voting.
A free voter identification card is available to any registered voter who does not already have a valid form of identification. It may be obtained by visiting any Registrar’s Office.
The final day/time to vote by absentee ballot is 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. For additional information, call the Registrar’s Office at (276) 694-7206.
