Alt-country honky-tonker Sierra Ferrell will perform at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Blue Ridge Music Center. Ferrell is stepping in for the Becky Buller Band, who was originally scheduled for that date.
Tickets are $20, and children 12 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available only the night of the show. Credit card purchases are encouraged. The concert will be held in the spacious outdoor amphitheater.
Tickets that were purchased in advance for any of the concerts that were canceled earlier this year will also be accepted for admission!
Describing herself as a “jing-janglin gypsy,” Ferrell will bring her quirky alt-country Americana honky-tonk songs to the stage. She cut her teeth on the rail lines, truck stops, street corners, and dingy, dimly lit listening rooms all across the land. Belting out her old-time melodies, she draws the audience into a tapestry of forlorn, star-crossed love, longing, poverty, suffering and triumph, encompassing many facets of the human spirit and the complexities of emotion that come with it.
Growing up in Charleston, West Virginia, Ferrell remembers her grandfather listening to gospel and old-time country, musical genres she began to appreciate when she reached her 20s. She says that she has “a country heart but a jazz mind,” which shows as she incorporates elements from old country, old jazz, and island-style music into her songs. Ferrell was recently signed to Rounder Records, and is slated to release an album later this year.
Opening the show are Luke Morris and Madison Elmore. The two both grew up playing Appalachian music. While Morris has performed at the Music Center many times with the bluegrass band ShadowGrass, this duo shows him stepping out into new territory, writing and singing heartfelt songs with Elmore.
The duo have been writing and singing together since 2018, and recently released their debut single “Take Me Back to the Blue Ridge.”
The Music Center is taking several precautions during concerts to make the experience as safe as possible for visitors. Those who have a fever, cough, aches and pains, loss of smell or taste, difficulty breathing, or if you are sneezing and coughing, are asked to please stay at home.
Concert attendees must follow these guidelines:
Maintain six feet of distance between groups throughout the evening, including when standing in line and selecting seating locations in the amphitheater.
When in high traffic areas (such as the bridge between the concert area and restrooms), concertgoers must wear a mask to protect others.
A hand sanitizing station will be set up near the admission gate. Please note that added precautions may slow entry to the amphitheater, so arriving early is encouraged.
