Floyd County Fair to celebrate agricultural heritage. The annual Floyd Livestock and County Fair takes place on Saturday, September 14 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Chantilly Farm in Floyd. The one-day celebration of Floyd County’s rich agricultural heritage is presented by the Floyd County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Hillbilly Goodies and Chantilly Farm.
This year’s theme is, ‘There’s No Place Like the Fair’, inspired by the classic film, Wizard of Oz. Areas of the venue are planned to mimic scenes from the story. Hope Gaynor, newly crowned Miss Floyd County Fair, will reign as the “good queen” and interact with fair attendees throughout the day.
As a new addition to fair festivities, Healthy Floyd will kick off the day with their Healthy Floyd 5k Run/Walk at 10am and an awards ceremony planned for the main stage immediately after. On-site registration for the run/walk begins at 9 a.m.
A paid general admission to the fair ($5 for adults, $3 for ages 7-17, 6 and under free) affords fair-goers the opportunity to tour exhibits, heritage crafts, displays and a petting zoo, listen to musical performances, see livestock shows and other demonstrations, participate in ag Olympics and contests, a scavenger hunt and play games in a carnival area.
Local organizations and businesses will be on site, a variety of food and drink will be available from vendors throughout the day, and into the evening RV/tent camping is available (call 540-808-4984 or visit www.chantillyfarm.com).
The late afternoon and evening will be lively – Lightning Ridge Rodeo Company will present Bulls, Barrels and Mutton Bustin’ (separate admission required) that is sure to be fun for all ages. Mutton Bustin’ for children will begin at 3 p.m.; bull riding and barrel racing will begin at 5 p.m. The first 100 children under 12 through the gate with a paid adult will receive a free bandana, courtesy of Buffalo Mountain Adventures. Tickets for this component of the event can be purchased online at floydvafair.com or at the gate. Food will be available from vendors and a beverage garden will be available to those over the age of 21.
Exhibitors, non-profits and vendors are still welcome to join – contact fair coordinator Joni Underwood at (540)392-5496. To learn more about the expanded offerings of the fair, and to view a full schedule, visit www.floydvafair.com.
