Gates Saunders Montgomery, age 83, of Ararat, died Wednesday, November 15, 2016, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center.
He was born in Patrick County on November 24, 1932 and was a son of the late Claude Wilson and Rebecca Bowman Montgomery. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Alma Griffin, Virginia Thompson, and Millie Montgomery; and by brothers, Robert Montgomery and Claude Montgomery.
He was retired from Armtex and was also well known as the co-owner/operator of Montgomery Greenhouses. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends.
Left to forever cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 64 years, Geraldine “Jinky” Heath Montgomery; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Stout; Janet and Jeff Reynolds; Dr. Rebecca Montgomery and husband Dr. Joe Dillard; and Sharon and Ricky Bishop; grandchildren, Sonnie Hardy and husband Stan; Stacy Smith and husband Korey; Kimberley Weddle and husband Travis; Michael Bishop and Walter Dillard; great-grandchildren; Zane Hardy, Sophie Smith, Porter Smith and Arwen Weddle; a sister, Mildred Pell; a brother-in-law, Turner Thompson, and sisters-in-law, Frances Montgomery and Delcie Montgomery.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 18, 2016 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Warren Bennett. Burial followed in Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
