The following request has been received by the Patrick County Genealogy Society.
• Anderson R Shelton and Mary A Keaton Shelton were my great-great-grandparents. The 1850 U.S. Federal Census notes that they lived in Southern District, Patrick, Virginia. In addition to Anderson and Mary, the following children were named: Sally A, 10; Abram J, 8; James, 6; Joshua, 3; Elizabeth, 1.
The 1860 lists Anderson and Mary and the following children: Sarah A., 18; Abraham, 16; James W., 14; Joshua T., 12; Frances E., 10; Perlina E., 8; Samuel P., 6; Joseph E., 5; Susan E. J., 3; George J., 8/12. (Joshua Thomas “Tom” Shelton was my great-grandfather.)
Anderson R. Shelton was a Confederate soldier. He served in Co. H, 42nd VA Inf. He died November 4, 1861 due to typhoid fever at Marlinton, W.Va. (At that time, it was Marlins Bottom, VA.)
The 1870 Census reports Mary living in Mayo, Patrick, Virginia, Post Office: Patrick Court House. The children were: Sarah A., 27; James W., 25; Joshua T., 22; Frances, 19; Polina E., 18; Samuel P., 16; Joseph E., 14; Susan E., 13; George J., 12; Anderson F., 9; Anderson, 9.
Son Abraham Jackson married Nancy Louis Shelton, October 3, 1869, Patrick County.
In the 1900 Census Mary, 78, continues to live in Mayo River, Patrick. Daughter Susan, 44, is living with her. This Census reports that Mary had 12 children and eight are living. If the children are counted according to the Census, there are 12 children. This includes two children named Anderson F. and Anderson both nine years old in the 1870 Census.
Question: Did Mary really name two sons Anderson F. and Anderson, both nine years old? If so, were they twins? This further indicates that four children are deceased by 1900. Through research, it is known that Sarah “Sallie” A. Shelton (m. John W Harris) died December 28, 1881.
Death dates are also known for the other children except: Francis Elizabeth, George J., Anderson F. and Anderson. Question: Which one of the last four named children lived beyond 1900? What are the death dates for the remaining three children? What is known about Francis E., George J., Anderson F. and Anderson?
