Psalm 121:1-8
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
We are at best on a journey filled with danger. We are pilgrims and strangers in a dangerous land. David looked unto the hill, and it was not capitol hill. We will be served to remember that God created everything and has everything under control!
We actually began our pilgrim journey when we received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. We are on a journey to a land whose builder and maker is God. Abraham was on a journey; we have a journey as well.
John 14:1-3 reads, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” What glory awaits us when we get home! On our journey there are many thieves that want to rob us of our peace, joy, and victory. We have to be careful not to let difficult times rob us of that peace, joy, and victory. Let us encourage each other in the Lord. We have a great and present help in the time of trouble!
In Psalm 121:2-4, we see the source of our help: the Creator of the universe. God created the universe. That same all-knowing God can take care of my problems. My God can take care of any problem whether it be physical or financial or anything else.
God is not only our creator; He is our comforter. God will not suffer my foot to be moved. God knows how easy it is for any foot to slip into sin and discouragement. Everyone has times when they feel like giving up. Everyone has times of discouragement! We have to remember that God is our creator and comforter. He has never made a mistake or failed. I am His, and He is mine! (Psalm 4:1-3) In John 16:13, we see that we have a comforter in the Holy Spirit.
In Psalm 121:4, we also see that God is our constant helper. We have times when we grow weary. We have times when we slip. We also have a God that knows that, and He never sleeps or slumbers! You don’t have to worry and stay up all night. We have a God that is always on the job!
The Lord is the source of our help! The Lord protects us from all of our enemies! The Lord takes up a position to defend us. We don’t even know where the attack will come from, but we know it’s coming!
The USS North Carolina was started in 1934 and was finished in 1941. It protected the Hornet, the Saratoga, and the Enterprise. Torpedoes were fired at it, but it never sank. The guns on the ship shot up to eight miles. God brought the ship and it’s men through numerous attacks.
After a night of bombing in London, some people went to check on Grandma Smith. The area where she lived had been bombed. The area where she lived had been bombed, and they asked how she had spent the night. She quoted Psalm 121 and said, The Lord will not sleep or slumber. There was no reason for both of us to stay up all night. She had put her trust in the Lord and slept right through the night bombing.
Pearl Harbor – December 7, 1941. New York – September 11, 2001. COVID-19 in 2020. Just like these instances, we may not know where the attack is coming from sometimes. It may be from someone we consider or a friend or someone we know is a foe, but we know that the Lord is always there for us.
Right now, in the midst of this storm, we should be shouting: He protects us from our enemies! We can defeat our present enemies! He has already defeated our future enemies as well!
The Lord is our help, our strength, and our security! When we trust in Him, He preserves us from the present evil, and He will preserve us throughout all eternity!
