Holmes Ellis Nelson, Sr., age 86 of Spencer, died January 12, 2021 of complications of Covid. He was born in Patrick County on January 9, 1935 to the late Walter Holmes Nelson and Lottie Pearl Ellis Nelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyte Leon Nelson, Sr.

He was retired from Stanley Furniture and was a lifelong farmer. He was a founding member of the Moorefield Store Volunteer Fire Department of which he was still a member.

He is survived by his wife, Ethylene Edwards Nelson; one daughter, Susan Hedrick and husband, Arnie; two sons, Paul Nelson, H.E. Nelson and wife, Sandra; granddaughter, Katie Poole and husband, Matt; two special great-grandchildren, Makayla and Grayson Poole; two sisters, Arlene Conway, Louise Stone and husband, Clifford; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellis loved his family, enjoyed riding his farm tractor, and visiting with friends. He appreciated anything anyone ever did for him and spent many happy times fishing with his neighbor Harold Coleman.

Because of Covid, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moorefield Store Vol. Fire Department, 0017 VA NC Rd., Spencer, VA 24165. Online condolences may be sent to www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
