The Homestead Hikers on Sunday, March 8, celebrated six years of outings in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont with a trip to Buffalo Mountain, the highest peak in the area. This group originated from the activities of the Reynolds Homestead in Patrick County and includes members from many neighboring counties. Hikers venture to varied destinations, from the Piedmont Triad cities of North Carolina to the New River and Roanoke Valleys of Virginia, each month. Since its founding in March 2014, the group has sponsored more than 70 outings, with 1157 participants hiking more than 160 miles of trails. Membership funds have provided benches, doggie stations, picnic tables, and signage throughout Patrick and Henry counties. In 2020, group hikes are planned in Patrick, Henry, Floyd, Franklin, and Giles counties in Virginia, and Forsyth and Rockingham counties in North Carolina.
