Eleven members of the Hardin Reynolds Memorial School Junior Beta Club attended the 20th annual Virginia State Junior Beta Convention held in Williamsburg on February 10-11. The theme this year was “Let the Beta Times Roll.” Members competed in academic competitions as well as arts and crafts competitions.
The students entered six academic competitions. Connor Campbell placed first in the state in science and Kelsey Gunter placed second in language arts. She also competed in Battle of the Books along with Payton Errichetti and Leonia McBride. Christian Edwards competed in spelling, Dillon Mills competed in math, and Payton Errichetti, Caleb Murphy, Kevin Nester, and Cameron Roark competed in the Tower of Power.
The students also entered arts and crafts competitions. Caleb Murphy placed third in recycled art for an airplane he made from Dr. Pepper cans. Payton Errichetti entered a black and white photograph, Mattthew Bowman entered a digitally enhanced photo and Leonia McBride entered a color photograph. Connor Campbell entered a pastel painting and Christian Edwards entered a pencil sketch. Dillon Mills entered a sculpture, and Alexis Roberts performed a dance in special talent.
The school also entered two theme-based group projects: a banner which was designed by Heather Edwards, Kursten Hylton, Karlyn Hall, and Jadyn Pruitt; and a t-shirt designed by Jadyn Pruitt, Alainah Harbour, Columbia Haycraft and Kursten Hylton.
The students were accompanied by two of their sponsors, Jen Cox and Sherry Hartman.
