The Patrick County junior varsity Cougar basketball team opened the season last week losing two games. In last Tuesday’s game at Gretna, the Cougars lost 51-38. Friday, they traveled to North Stokes and lost to the Vikings 50-30.
According to Coach Tony Mosley, the JV Cougars experienced some “nervousness” at the beginning of Tuesday’s game. “This resulted in a big quarter for Gretna,” he said. “We settled into the game and played the Gretna Hawks more evenly,” he added.
“Jay Penn and DaeShawn Penn played particularly well for us,” he said.
Jay scored 13 points and DaeShawn added 12 points in the game.
Friday’s game at North Stokes High School saw the Vikings outscore the Cougars 24-10 in the first half. Patrick County picked up its offensive game in the third quarter and added 16 points to the Vikings’ 14, but not enough to cut the big difference in the first half.
Jay Penn scored 14 points and DaeShawn Penn and Lane Taylor each added five.
“We went through long stretches of not being able to score, which hurt us greatly,” Mosley said. “We made a tremendous effort to get back into the game with a 16-point third quarter, but cold shooting in the final quarter killed any chance of a comeback,” he said.
“Jay Penn, Lane Taylor, Desmond McClain And DaeShawn Penn all displayed solid efforts in the game,” he added.
This week the JV Cougars hosted Chatham Monday night and travel to Floyd County Wednesday (today). Friday, they play North Stokes again at home with the game starting at 5:30 p.m.
