It was a good week for the Patrick County High School junior varsity Lady Cougar basketball team.
They picked up three wins to improve their record to 12-4 on the season.
Last Tuesday, the JV Lady Cougars defeated Tunstall 43-4. Sierra Hubbard was leading scorer with 11, followed by Jenna King with nine points.
“All of our kids play a lot and played well,” said Coach Donny Rakes. “This was a good start to a three-game week,” he added.
“We were unselfish and shared the ball extremely well,” he added. “We played hard defensively the entire game.”
The score of the game at the half was 29-3; the second half was played with a running clock.
Wednesday, the Lady Cougar JVs played Blacksburg at home and won 34-28.
“This was a solid win for our girls,” Rakes said. “We were fortunate to come out on top in this one—Blacksburg is a very well-coached, tough team.’
The game was a series of runs—PCHS had a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter; they came back with 15 points in the second to tie the game. Then the Lady Cougars went on a 7-0 run to end the half.
“We outscored them by eight in the third, and then just held on for a six-point win,” Rakes said. “We keep finding ways to win.”
Sierra Hubbard scored 12, Amanda Ramey added nine.
Friday, the Lady Cougars traveled to Danville to play the Lady Eagles JVs and won 43-32.
“This was a physical game, the norm for George Washington,” Rakes said.
Nobody led by more than three points in the first half; the Lady Eagles led by two at the half.
“Sierra Hubbard scored 12 points in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Eagles 15-6 to take the lead,” Rakes said.
“I can’t say enough about the growth of this team—they have turned into a hard-nosed group. I am proud of their determination,” Rakes said.
“Sierra Hubbard has been, no question, our leader as an eighth grader. She continues to work hard and has the potential to be a very special high school player,” he stated.
This was the ninth straight win for the Lady Cougar JVs.
The Lady Cougars traveled to Martinsville Tuesday night. Thursday, they will host Magna Vista and Friday, they will host Halifax County High School.
