After receiving a bye in the opening round of Conference 32 Tournament softball action last Monday, the Patrick County High School Lady Cougars defeated Hidden Valley 11-0 after five innings Wednesday.
Friday, they played for the championship and lost to Abingdon 4-0. Patrick County plays Western Albemarle Monday in the opening round of Region 3A competition at Lady Cougar field.
In last Friday’s game, the Lady Cougars had four hits, but just could not get the ball to fall in their favor.
“We hit the ball hard and had some real good at-bats at the plate, but just couldn’t get the ball out of Abingdon’s gloves,” said Coach Roger Wilson.
Zoe Hutchens, Brandi Woods, Savannah Moorefield and Melissa Pendleton each had a hit in the game.
Cassidy Largen pitched the entire game, striking out 10 Lady Falcon batters.
Last Wednesday against Hidden Valley, the Lady Cougars picked up three runs in the first inning and eight runs in the third inning while sending 11 batters to the plate—eight runs off nine hits.
Brandi Woods started things off with a single, then a walk from Zoe Hutchens and Melanie Roberson reaching on an error. With the bases loaded, Hanna Hylton hit a hard ball up the center to score two runners.
The bases were loaded again when Montana Moorefield gapped one to the left side and cleared the bases with a three RBI single. Brandi Woods emptied the bases again with a two-run homer over the right-center fence.
Cassidy Largen threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts—the only runners were a hit batter and two walks.
Brandi Woods was 3-3 at the plate, scoring three runs, driving in two RBIs and hitting a homerun. Sydney Biggs, Montana Moorefield, Melanie Roberson, Savannah Moorefield, Melissa Pendleton and Hanna Hylton each had one hit.
Region 3 playoffs began Monday with the Lady Cougars hosting Western Albemarle at home.
