The Patrick County High School softball team traveled to Grayson County last Monday and lost 6-7.
After trailing 6-1, the Lady Cougars made a lot of noise in the top of the seventh. Brooklyn Caviness started things off by reaching first on an error. Jenna King put down a nice bunt to move Caviness.
Montana Moorefield singled and with runners on the corners Morgan Biggs reached on a fielder’s choice to score Caviness. Makenzie Watts then came up with a big two-RBI single which cut the lead to 6-4.
Danielle King came to the plate and reached first on an error. With two outs and two on, Sydney Biggs got one through the left side for a two-RBI single tying the game 6-6.
With runners in scoring position for Grayson County in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Cougar defense held the runners to take the game into extra innings.
The Lady Cougars were unable to score in the top of the eighth and Grayson County scratched one across after the batter reached on a double and later scored by an error.
“It was great to see the girls fight with their backs against the wall,” said Head Coach Roger Wilson. “When any team goes into the last inning with your last chance to score, and being down 6-1 it’s hard to see a good outcome. But this team could see it, and they fought hard to get back into and then to tie. We are extremely proud of their effort today.”
On Thursday the Lady Cougars played at home against Floyd County High School and lost 3-6. The bats were not as productive for Patrick County with only three hits for the game.
Sydney Biggs went 1 of 4 with two RBIs; Danielle King and Makenzie Watts each had an RBI single.
Hannah Beasley and Katherine Beckett split time in the circle. Beasley recorded one strikeout, two walks and allowed two hits and a run. Beckett had four strikeouts, allowed six hits with four earned runs.
Roger Wilson was looking at the positives when he commented on the game. “The game might not look good on paper but overall we did some good things today,” he said. “We are making strides with this team and that’s what we need to see from them.
“This team is young and a lot of girls are playing together for the first time and playing in positions they aren’t used to. We still have work we need to do but overall we are getting better.”
