The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar softball team improved its record to 12-2 overall, 5-0 Conference 32, last week with wins over Tunstall and Abingdon.
Last Tuesday the Lady Cougars traveled to Tunstall and defeated the Lady Trojans 6-4. The Lady Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning, scoring three runs on four hits.
The Lady Trojans answered PC’s strong start with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Cougars scored two more runs in the second inning to move ahead 5-3 and another run in the fifth inning, as did Tunstall, making the final score 6-4.
“We shut them down after the first inning with good defense and strong pitching from Cassidy (Largen),” said Coach Roger Wilson.
Largen went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 Tunstall batters.
Savannah Moorefield had three hits and scored two runs. Morgan Hughes had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runners. Zoe Hutchens and Abby Hutchens each had a hit and an RBI.
Friday evening, the Lady Cougars hosted Abingdon and beat the Lady Falcons 8-1.
Abby Hutchens’ opening inning two-run homer put the Lady Cougars on the scoreboard early in the game.
The fourth inning saw Patrick County’s bats come alive. “We scored big in the fourth—picking up six runs on five hits with 11 batters batting,” Wilson said.
Morgan Hughes had a “big” two-RBI single while Savannah Moorefield had two hits, scored two runs and one RBI.
Prior to Friday’s game, the Lady Cougar softball team presented a check to Hannah Beasley and her family to help with costs associated with Hannah’s kidney cancer treatments. Two weeks ago, the Lady Cougars and the Patrick County High School Student Government Association sponsored a benefit game against Magna Vista as well as a variety of events on campus to benefit Hannah. A total of over $10,000 was raised during the event and was presented to Hannah and her family at last Friday’s game.
This week, the Lady Cougars traveled to Magna Vista Tuesday and will travel to Halifax Thursday.
