The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar volleyball team traveled to Mount Airy, N.C., last Thursday afternoon and played Surry Central, Mount Airy and Surry County High Schools. In the first scrimmage. The Lady Cougars came out on top against Surry Central.
“I thought we played really well last night,” said Head Coach Heidi Moore. “We made mistakes, but the players were correcting issues and working with each other well,” she added.
The Lady Cougars came to play, displaying their confidence and teamwork. “The girls showed a lot of heart and determination last night. In the first game, we did not allow an ace,” Moore said. “We put up some tough serves and received serves really well,” she added.
According to Moore, there were a few low points that the coaches noted during the scrimmages. “We need to change plays more on offense so the opposing team will not focus on blocking one particular type of hit,” she said.
Surry Central took advantage of several PC sets and kill shots by covering them and passing the ball to the other side of the net where no Lady Cougar was covering the court.
“We also need work on reading shoulders better on defense,” Moore said. “I don’t really consider these low points, but they are things we need to focus on in the next few practices,” she explained.
“Everyone who played worked hard and showed us great things,” Moore said.
“We will continue to work hard and practice to prepare physically and mentally for the first game, which is August 22, against Carroll County.”
The first home game is August 24 against Floyd County.
