The Landmark Center and Blue Ridge Therapy Connection presented a New Year’s celebration on January 12 at The Landmark Center.
The theme was “2017 Dreams, Wishes, and Resolutions.”
The community was invited to share and celebrate the New Year. Landmark Catering prepared delicious refreshments and entertainment was provided by Ted Alt.
The Activity Department is privileged to share many wonderful, learning, and challenging activities with Landmark residents each day. One of these is the Art Fusion Discussion Group which is led by Beth Ford and Becky Turner from the Reynolds Homestead.
Each month Beth prepares this activity with much thought, not omitting any detail. On January 10, Beth and Becky provided various collectibles and antiques to share with the residents. Residents enjoyed the stories and descriptions of each item on display. These items brought back many memories which the residents shared with each other.
Local artists Ursula Allen, Norma Bozenmayer and Kathy Pettitt led the Community Art Class January 12 at The Landmark Center. Residents created beautiful pictures using items such as a paint brush made from dried okra. Residents always have a lot of fun and learn something new at each class.
Residents welcomed members from the Patrick Springs Church of God of Prophesy on January 11. Church members led the residents in singing and also played the hand bells.
On Saturday morning, January 14, Landmark residents and staff welcomed a new group; the “Two Hands Project,” to The Landmark Center. I asked Grace Helms to share with me a little about this group of adults and children and how it got started. She shared this poem with me:
I can change the world, with my own two hands.
Make it a better place, with my own two hands.
Make it a kinder place, with my own two hands.
With my own, with my own, two hands.
We want our children to grow up to be loving, compassionate, and community-minded individuals. The “Two Hands Project,” seeks to instill these values into our little ones through meeting needs in our community. Whether it be picking up trash, preparing a meal, or spreading love through art, our kiddos can change the world with their own two hands. The senior cosmetology class from Patrick County High School joined Landmark residents January 17 and provided manicures. Residents always look forward to being with these young students.
Youth from Abiding Grace Church joined the residents for Game Night on January 18. Their visits are so much more than “Game Night.” For the residents, this is an opportunity to have fun with children; for the children it is a time to share with adopted “grandpas and grandmas.” Thank you to all the adults who make these visits possible!
Although the weather has been cooler and rainy, residents continue to enjoy the bus trips. January 10, they traveled to Martinsville for lunch and enjoyed fish. January 12, they ate breakfast locally, and on January 17, they went to a local Mexican Restaurant for lunch. On January 19, residents went on a ride-about.
Singer Mike Hall weathered the snow Friday evening, January 6, and shared the message of Christ with the residents. Other after dinner entertainment includes the Mountain View Singers, Roger Wells, and Sue Nester. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us.

The next community Operation Homefront Meeting will be on February 7 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Landmark Center. This event is sponsored by Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. For more information, contact Susan Foster at (276) 694-4416. Refreshments will be served.

“Share Your Heart with Pasta,” presented by Blue Ridge Therapy Connection, will be selling meals on Monday, February 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit The Caring Heart Free Clinic.
