A local man was charged with reckless driving in connection with a fatal crash in Henry County last week, according to information from the Virginia State Police.
A child also was injured during the incident that occurred at 6:46 p.m. March 1 on Stones Dairy Road in Henry County (Virginia 687), within 200 feet north of the intersection with Hall Harbour Road (Virginia 1820), according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Brad Lane and a release.
Daniel James Martin II, 36, of Stuart, was operating a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado truck, and traveling south on Virginia 687, Lane said.
The truck “swerved to miss an animal in the roadway,” Lane said. The truck then allegedly crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2000 Mazda Protégé sedan, according to a release from Sgt. Rick Garletts.
Doris Mavis Pilson, 64, of Bassett, was driving the Mazda, according to Lane and the release. She was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the incident, Lane said.
The passenger in the vehicle, an 8-year-old girl, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, according to the release. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, reports stated.
Pilson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the release stated.
Martin was wearing his seatbelt, the release stated.
He was charged with reckless driving in connection with the incident, the report stated.
Lane said speed was not a factor in the crash.
The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called in Wednesday to help with the investigation, according to the release.
Lane said reconstruction efforts were completed before officers cleared the scene on Wednesday.
Virginia State Police Trooper J. N. Mabe is continuing the investigation of the incident, according to the release.
