All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students interested in the American Revolution are invited to participate in the Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

The Patrick County branch of the George Waller Chapter of Patrick County and Henry County is offering a $50 prize to the winner, who would have a chance to compete at the state level and potentially at the national level. Although it is the same chapter, Henry County is not participating with a local prize.

The contest is open to public school, parochial, home schooled, Scouting, or Children of the American Revolution member students in that same grade range. Young artists with an enthusiasm toward art, a love of American history, or a passion in creative expression can submit their posters to their local SAR chapter for competition.

While the Americanism Poster Contest begins at the local level, students’ masterpieces may eventually be judged and monetarily awarded at the national level in June at the annual SAR Congress.

Participants from other organizations must be of equivalent age for 3rd, 4th,5th or 6th grades. The program is designed to support the efforts of teachers that teach the Colonial and Revolutionary period. All entries will be judged on an equal basis regardless of point of origin.

Please be aware that the local application deadline dates may vary, so interested applicants should reach out to their local SAR chapter for further details. The theme for the Poster Contest rotates annually based upon whether the school year ends in an even or odd number.

The theme is “Revolutionary War Events.”

Rules and Guidelines:
• All posters must be two-dimensional. We will not accept or allow any three-dimensional entries. Drawings and other images created by the student may be drawn on paper and adhered to the poster board. No more the two layers of paper may be applied to the poster board.
• Submitted posters shall be on either traditional flexible poster board, 22 inches x 28 inches or foamed backed poster board, 20 inches x 30 inches.
• The student’s name cannot be on the front of the poster.
• Computer aided graphics only originally created by the student will be allowed. No commercially produced or printed material (such as clip art) or photographs are allowed. Use of trademarked or copyrighted material will be grounds of disqualification.
• All letters, numbers, wording and dates must be done by hand, by the student directly on the poster board. No computer typed letters, numbers, wording or dates will be printed and adhered to the poster. (Suggestion: All lettering, numbering, words and dates may be written in pencil, checked for alignment, spelling etc. and then be written over in ink, paint etc. To help students align wording they may choose to pencil line the poster with the help of rulers and yardsticks.)

Each local school winner will compete at the chapter level. Each chapter winner will compete on the state society level. Each state society winner will compete on the national level.
