The Jeb Stuart Rescue Squad plans to recruit the volunteers needed for a new auxiliary membership.
This is the perfect opportunity for those who have some free time to volunteer, but do not want to be involved in the day-to-day operations of the squad, according to Derek Wagner, captain of the squad.
Volunteers who serve in the auxiliary membership will be responsible for planning public events, fundraising, and overall support the squad with other duties. Membership in the auxiliary is open to anyone of any age, Wagner said.
The squad also recently implemented some other new ideas.
For instance, in February 2017, the squad implemented the “Ride Along Program,” to allow residents aged 16 and older to respond to calls with squad members. The exploratory type program provides potential squad members the opportunity “to find out for themselves if EMS/volunteering is for them,” Wagner said.
“The squad also expanded their junior membership in 2017 by lowering the age requirement to 13. We hope to get the younger generations interested in EMS by giving them early opportunities,” Wagner said.
He added this program not only benefits the organization, but it also provides individuals with educational opportunities, which may open many other doors in life.
“As captain of the squad, I began volunteering as a junior member with the squad when I was a junior in Patrick County High School,” Wagner said. “During my volunteer career, I have held several positions” including serving as captain for nearly three years.
“Joining the squad has helped strengthen my leadership ability, (provided) learn life-long lessons,” according to Wagner. Most of all, he said, it has helped him “overcome obstacles in life.
“As captain and a former junior member, I would love to see the junior membership grow and become an intricate part of the squad,” Wagner said.
