A Martinsville man is being held in Patrick County after his arrest early Monday, according to a release from Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
Smith explained that his office received a call on Monday reporting that the door of a home on Cherry Creek Road in Vesta had been kicked in. The home was occupied by a lone woman.
Patrick County Sheriff’s Sgt. C.L. Elgin responded to the scene, and spoke to the woman. He subsequently noticed a man walking on Cherry Creek Road. Elgin attempted to effect an arrest, Smith said in the release, but the man fled on foot.
Elgin gave chase, and again attempted to place him into custody. Senior deputy Doug Perry arrived at that point, according to Smith, who alleged the man continued to resist arrest. Elgin deployed his CED (Conductive Energy Device/TASER) and used OC spray (Oleoresin capsicum/Pepper Spray). The man continued to physically resist, according to Smith.
Sheriff’s Lt. Dustin Foley arrived on scene, and the three officers were able to subdue the man and take him into custody, Smith said, and alleged the man appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine. The sheriff added that a methamphetamine smoking device was allegedly found in his possession.
The sheriff alleged the man continued to be physically combative once inside of the intake area of the jail.
“Every time we deal with him, he does this, it is just a matter of time before he seriously hurts someone,” Smith said in a Monday news release. He noted that the man is a “multiple time convicted felon, with five previous probation violation convictions.
“I have lost count at the number of times we’ve had to use force since I have been the sheriff,” Smith said. “This is certainly not how we prefer to deal with people, but he leaves us no other choice.”
Corey “Goof” Adam Martin, 36, of 135 E. Main Street, Martinsville, was charged with obstruction of justice, trespassing with the intent to damage property, destruction of property, and public intoxication in connection with the incident.
The smoking device will be sent to the state forensic lab to be analyzed for drug presence, Smith said, and added that additional charges may be pending.
Martin is being held in the Patrick County Jail without bond.
