Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice were honored Monday at the annual Memorial Day Service held at Patrick Memorial Gardens.
In addition to speakers retired Lt. Col. Douglas Dunlap, who detailed the history of Memorial Day; and retired Navy Capt. Arthur Halstead III, guest speaker, music was provided by Johnny Joyce.
A POW/MIA remembrance chair, with a pair of empty boots nearby, served as a sobering reminder of those who didn’t come home.
Candles were lit for those veterans who died in 2017 in which the Honor Guard provided military rites, as the names were read.
A 21 gun salute by the rifle squad and a haunting rendition of Taps concluded the annual service.
