In a pair of make-up games snowed out last week, the Patrick County High School men’s and women’s teams defeated the Tunstall Trojans Saturday afternoon at home. In the women’s contest, the Lady Cougars won 69-11; in the men’s contest, the Cougars won 73-50.
In the opening game, the Lady Cougars held the Lady Trojans to single-digit scores for all four quarters.
Patrick County scored 29 points in the first period to Tunstall’s four. The second quarter showed the Lady Cougars cutting back on their offensive push, adding 11 points, and holding the Lady Trojans to just one point.
In the final period, PC pushed ahead with 21 points while holding Tunstall to only two for the 69-11 victory.
Sierra Hubbard led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds. Alexus Cain added 10 while Lindsey Marshall scored nine—all three-pointers. Riya Patel picked up eight points, including two three-pointers. Abby Dillon brought down eight rebounds, and Autumn Hubbard led assists with five.
“This was a good team win. Everyone played a considerable amount of minutes and everyone on the roster scored,” said Coach Donny Rakes.
The Cougars had little time for practice this past week due to weather. “We hadn’t been able to practice but once this week, but the kids still played with a lot of effort,” Rakes said. “I thought we were very unselfish with the ball; 19 assists is a testament to that,” he added.
This was the start of five games in a calendar week. Make-ups from the past five days will “really test our squad,” Rakes said. “We are looking forward to the challenge,” he added.
This week the Lady Cougars will host Halifax Monday and travel to Franklin County Tuesday. Thursday the Lady Cougars will host Martinsville where admission is free to all attending the game. Saturday, the Lady Cougars will be part of an eight-game match-up with the Lady Bengals of Bassett. Middle school boys and girls will start at 11 a.m.; JV boys will follow them. Varsity boys and girls will play later in the afternoon with the girls slated to begin at approximately 4:30 p.m.
The Patrick County Lady Cougars hold a record of 11-3 overall, 7-0 in the Piedmont District.
