From what I hear, the “flu bug” has hit Patrick County. We need some cold weather—60s and 70s temperatures are not good for killing germs.

They made cabbage soup, “greens soup” and pinto beans and then added homemade bread and corn bread.I enjoyed a visit with my 102-year-old neighbor, “Miss” Vera Plasters. She looked really good, smiling and talking. She is so amazing.Thanks to Dorothy Vipperman for her kindness to me. She’s always giving me “homegrown” eggs, then last week she slipped in a surprise—thank you.Heartfelt sympathy to Arlene Shough in the loss of her sister, Jean Bolyn.It surely was good to hear Eric Sheppard sing at church on Wednesday night and we also got to enjoy a good meal cooked by the men’s ministry. Then, Pastor Marion had a really good sermon that everyone needed to hear.”Miss Claudine” Wood is doing well and enjoying company and both she and I love the sunny days. It’s a joy to talk to her almost every day. She is doing great at 97 years.Think about this: if you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul, you can tell the love of Jesus and say “He died for all.” From a traditional spiritual.
Salt substitute: 1/2 tsp. chili powder, 2 tsp. ground oregano, 2 tsp. ground black pepper, 1 Tbsp. garlic powder, 2 Tbsp. ground mustard, 6 Tbsp. onion powder, 3 Tbsp. paprika, 3 Tbsp. poultry seasoning. Mix well. Fill one salt shaker for table. Keep rest in sealed jar or share with someone.
POOR MAN’S COOKIES
(From plain and healthy cookbook Amish in Ohio)2 cups rolled oats1 cup packed brown sugar1/2 cup white sugar1 cup flour1/4 tsp salt1 tsp. baking soda1/4 cup hot water1/2 cup shortening, melted and cooled1 tsp. vanillaIn a large bowl, combine first 5 ingredients, combine soda and hot water. Stir into oatmeal mixture along with melted shortening and vanilla. Roll into walnut-size balls.
Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes as until golden brown. Allow to cool for two minutes before removing from pan. Yield 3 1/2 dozen.Food for thought
