Mrs. Phyllis Stegall Chitwood, age 86 of Stuart, Virginia passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 1, 2021. She was born in Patrick County on January 14, 1935 to the late Walter Lee Stegall and Sally Ann Bowman Stegall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jeff Handy. Phyllis was a very intelligent and hardworking businesswoman, known for her dedication to her job. She enjoyed traveling, playing online bingo and casino games, playing golf, and fine arts. She was intrigued by tracing her ancestry and had located her birth mother through her research.
Mrs. Chitwood is survived by her loving husband, Lawrence Austin “Cotton” Chitwood; five children, Jimmy Handy, Larry Chitwood (Renee), Donald Chitwood (Carole), Billy Chitwood (Martha), and Linda McCullum (Guy); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Kitty Cat.
A funeral service for Mrs. Chitwood will be held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Eugene Chitwood officiating. The committal service will be private. She will lie in state at the funeral home on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 730 E.
