Mt. Joy Naturals, located on Main Street in Stuart, is meeting the local demand for alternative ways to relieve stress and pain without the use of pharmaceutical drugs.
Joe Sutfin, the owner, said he likes to pitch his products as medicinal, not recreational.
“There’s really no addiction to it, especially CBD,” he said, adding that CBD and THC products can help with anxiety, sleep, pain and tension, and chronic pain.
“We try and serve lower doses and stuff, and really target older customers and stuff. We really target it on pain relief, and we add other ingredients in there, different herbs and stuff,” he said.
Sutfin decided to open the business eight months ago, after opening his first store in Galax three years ago.
“There was a previous hemp store here, and he was kind of going out of business and he offered it to us. I felt like the right time to expand and move into another area,” Sutfin said, adding that he likes to set up shop in smaller towns because it allows the store to be more personal with its customers and provide a unique product.
“We sell CBD and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) products, but along with it, we sell 25 to 30 different herbs, sleep aids, dog oils and treatments for animals, lotions and topicals, and things like that as well,” he said.
Natalie Sutfin, who manages the store, said the most popular items include the Delta-9 and THC edibles and topicals, which are used “for arthritis, skin conditions, and like chronic pain. We have a smaller milligram dose of edibles all the way up to a 100-milligram dose of edibles.”
The topicals, which can have cooling effects, range in size from 250 milligrams to 4,000 milligrams of CDB, she said.
Mt. Joy’s also sells marijuana growing supplies including tents, lights, and fertilizer.
“We have seeds and offer advice as well,” he added.
Joe Sutfin also has plans for further expansion, particularly in the manufacturing side of products.
While the future of retail THC products in Virginia is somewhat in limbo, the company is interested in getting a license to expand once it is available.
“It’s kind of where we’ve hit our bread and butter. We manufacture for about probably 45 to 50 different companies, and we sell to about 20 to 25 different states and two different countries,” he said.
Mt. Joy currently makes its own products, including its topicals and edibles.
“We’re just trying to get into the manufacturing side of things and continue to provide the products for people to make and sell. Hopefully, it’ll be profitable as well,” he said.
The company works directly with the state and is hands-on with the Virginia Department of Agricultural Consumer Services (VDACS).
“They highly recommend us. We follow all the rules and regulations, talk with them, we send in our labels for approval and stuff. All of our recipes are approved by them before we sell anything,” Joe Sutfin said and noted the company’s products are also tested via a third party to ensure milligram count and dosages are what they say they are.
