CLARENCE ADAMS
Clarence “Doug” Adams, 74, of Dorothy Drive, Martinsville, died Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born November 27, 1942 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Audrey Harris Adams and the late Alton Clyde Adams. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Adams Smith; and his brother, Carl Adams.
He served for six years in the Army National Guard as a sharpshooter and marksman and retired after 43 years at Fieldcrest Mills. He was an avid U.S. history buff.
Surviving are his wife, Elaine Ashley Adams of the home; his son Jeffery W. Matthews of Martinsville; one sister, Beatrice Adams Turner of Patrick Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastors Doug Ramsey and Derek Futrell officiating. Burial was at Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery.

Edwin (Eddie) Pierce Alderman, 54, from Meadows of Dan, went to heaven above to be with his mother, Jewel M. Light and grandson, River Cervero, on December 29, 2016.
No funeral services will be held; a “celebration of life” will take place in the spring. (The family will make sure everyone knows when and where this will take place.)
He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and son. He was a master carpenter, electrician, plumber, hunter, arrowhead finder and fisherman. He helped raise two beautiful, loving, kind and caring girls, Katrina and Kimmi, that loved him back equally. He will be missed forever.
He is survived by two daughters and their families, Mike and Katrina Card Cervero, granddaughter Irie of Wilmington, N.C., and Chris and Kimberly Gregory, grandchildren Jack and Juliet of Portland, Ore.; four sisters, Wanda Turman and Freeda Harris, both of Willis, Tina Shelton of Patrick Springs, and Emma Alderman of Geneva, Fla.; three brothers, Benny Handy of Meadows of Dan, Alvin Alderman of Hillsville, and Wendell Alderman of Meadows of Dan; his father, Winston P. Alderman of Floyd.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
JATHINA E. BOWMAN
Jathina Josephine Eaton Bowman, 98, of Mount Airy, N.C., and formerly of Ararat, died Monday, January 2, 2017.
She was one of ten children born to the late William Tyler and Lavinia Ellen Marshall Eaton. She was born in Patrick County on April 27, 1918. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Bowman; her only son, Roger Dale Bowman; siblings, Tressy, Ernest, Arthur, John, Dorothy, Glen, Raymond Clinard, Polly and Thelma.
She attended Jeb Stuart School and worked at Spencer’s Inc.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, at Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church in Ararat with Mary Eaton Bliss officiating. Family and friends will gather immediately following the service in the fellowship building.

Lucille Gardner Cassady, 71, of 1103 Sylvan Avenue, Martinsville, passed away at her home Sunday, December 25, 2016.
She was born April 15, 1945, to the late Mildred Nena Leavell Gardner and the late Claude Allen Gardner. She was predeceased by her first husband, Leon Byrd, and her brother, Claude “Oscar” Gardner.
She was affiliated with the Lutheran church. She attended Martinsville High School and was a member of Relay for Life and worked as administrative assistant for The American Cancer Society.
Surviving are her husband, Clarence Cassady of the home; daughters, Leonne` Byrd Wilkins (Jon), Lynette Byrd Saville (Don), Kristen Cassady (Chris Trent); grandchildren, Adrienne Brady, Matthew Lester, Jillian Wilkins, Jordan Saville, Makayla Saville and Christopher Trent; and great-grandchildren, Levi Brady and Declan Brady.

George Calvin Craig, 79, of Farmers Drive, Martinsville, died at his residence Friday, December 30, 2016.
He was born August 5, 1937 in Stuart and was a son of the late Benjamin Craig and the late Pearl Davison Craig. He was also predeceased by seven brothers.
He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He retired after 30 years of service working as a master electrician at Stanley Furniture.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Thomas Craig of the home; daughters, Betty Farmer and Lisa Smith, both of Martinsville; son, Marvin Craig of Martinsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister and several nieces and nephews.

Marie Haynes Fain, 86, of Spencer, passed away on Tuesday, December, 27, 2016.
She was the daughter of Morton Dudley Haynes Sr. and Gladys Spencer Haynes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Murray Hardin Fain, her son, Murray Steven Fain, and her brother, Morton Haynes.
For many years she was a sales associate at Robby’s Army-Navy Surplus Store in downtown Martinsville. In addition to being a homemaker and a gardener, she also had a passion for dogs and hummingbirds. A long-time member of the Calvary Christian Church, her quiet presence in the community will be very much missed.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 30, 2016, at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Mike Carrow officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.

Kenneth Ray Flippin, age 73, of Stuart, died on December 31, 2016, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on December 26, 1943 and was a son of the late Andy Jesse Flippin and Lula Mae Bingman Flippin. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Flippin.
Surviving are three brothers, Junior Andy Flippin, Billy Wayne Flippin, and Eddie Joe Flippin, all of Stuart; three sisters, Bonnie Lawson of Stuart, Shelby Hall of Collinsville and Linda Quesenberry of Laurel Fork; and several nieces and nephews.

Marion “Allen” Goad, age 49, of Stuart, died on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
He was born in Henry County on July 31, 1967 to Claude Marion Goad and Leonia H. Goad. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Tina Renee Goad-Tatum.
He was a member of Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church.

Ester K Goins, 97, of Claudville, died December 23, 2016 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart.
She was born March 4, 1919 and was a daughter of the late Sam and Elle Crissman King, and was of the Baptist faith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Martin Goins; one granddaughter, three sisters, and one brother.

Willie “Bill” S. Goins, age 75, of Stuart, died Thursday, December 22, 2016, at N.C. Baptist Medical Center.
He was born in Patrick County on February 8, 1941 and was a son of the late Ruby Goins. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Toni Lynn Goins; a grandson, Brandon Bowman; and a brother, James Goins.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Meredith Goins of the home; three daughters, Joyce Wolfe, Kay Pack, and Penny Bowman, all of Mount Airy, N.C.; two sons, Randy Goins of Ararat and Billy Goins of Stuart; six grandchildren; one sister, Linda Jones of Stuart; three brothers, Tom Goins of Patrick Springs, Carl Goins of Claudville, and Charlie Goins of Ararat; and several nieces and nephews.

Opal Boyd Gregory, age 81, of Stuart, went to be with the Lord on December 27, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Floyd County on July 6, 1935 to the late Grover Boyd and Nancy Burnette Boyd.
She had retired from Phillip Morris Tobacco Co. in Richmond after 37 years of service. Since her retirement she loved traveling with her husband, Spencer. Together they visited every state in the Continental U.S and especially loved traveling to Alaska. She loved reading and writing in her journals.
Surviving are her husband, Spencer M. Gregory of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Shona and Jerry Helms of Stuart; two stepsons, Lawrence Troy Gregory of Nags Head, N.C., and James Lee Gregory of Savannah, Ga.; three grandchildren, Rocky Helms and wife Amy, Summer Pike and husband Scott, and Dawn Quesinberry and husband Lee; three stepgrandchildren, Alexandra Gregory, Danielle Gregory and Damian Gregory; 12 great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild.

Herman W. Hall of Rockingham County, N.C., passed on to be with his departed loved ones on December 31, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Taylor Hall; his mother, Georgia Wilbur Hodges Hall; and an infant brother, Elbert Terry Hall.
He had attended Baptist churches. Surviving are his devoted wife of 16 years, Brenda A. ROBERT T. HARBOUR
Robert Thomas Harbour, 87, of Bassett, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at his home.
He was born June 19, 1929 in Patrick County to the late Carper Alex Harbour and the late Florence Martin Harbour. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tina Marie Harbour; brothers, Carper Elwood Harbour and William Henry Harbour; and a sister, Eva Harbour Wagoner.
He attended school in Patrick County and later served two years in the U.S. Army, spending time in Kaiserslautern, Germany, during the Korean Conflict. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Henry County where he spent the rest of his life although he never lost his love of Patrick County.
He was co-owner of Harbour Brothers Lumber Company in Reidsville, N.C., for over 50 years along with his brothers, Elwood and Henry.
He had been a member of Blackberry Baptist Church for more than 45 years, serving on many committees including the deacon board where he had served as chairman, taught the youth boys’ Sunday school class, sang in the choir and served as Sunday school director.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Peggy Earles Harbour; son, Dennis Allen Harbour of Martinsville; daughter, Susan Harbour Cruise of Ridgeway; two granddaughters; sisters, Sadie Harbour Koger of Bassett, Mary Harbour Flippen of Vinton; one niece and six nephews.
The funeral service was held Friday, December 23, 2016, in the Blackberry Baptist Church with Dr. G. H. Vaughan and the Rev. Merle Brown officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mary Lucille Hatcher, affectionately known as “Miss Lucy,” died Saturday, December 24, 2016, while at her daughter’s home.
She was born December 11, 1924, in Stuart, to the late Jesse and Louvie Rodgers Rogers. She was also predeceased by her husband, Webster Daniel “W.D.” Hatcher; two brothers, Jerry and Curt Rogers; and one sister, Colleen Rakes.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her son, Ted Hatcher of Martinsville; her daughter, Tami Hatcher of Horsepasture; special daughter and caregiver, Rachel Tibbs; and one sister, Melba Stevens of Columbia, S.C..

Luther Wade Hubbard, 87, of Laurel Fork, died on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at Heritage Hall in Meadows of Dan.
He was born in Patrick County to the late Mae Wood Hubbard and Charlie Dan Hubbard. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Hubbard; a son, David Hubbard; and two brothers, Hampton Hubbard and Eugene Hubbard.
He worked as a farmer in Meadows of Dan and served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are one son, Danny Hubbard of Meadows of Dan; one sister, Liela Hubbard of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Raymond Hubbard and Howard Hubbard, both of Meadows of Dan; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lonnie “Papa” Inman, 59, of Mayodan, N.C., died Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at his home.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 24, 2016, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Inman Family Cemetery.
Lonnie was born August 12, 1957, in Patrick County to the late John Everette Inman and Gracie Mae Collins.
He worked for many years in the logging industry as a truck driver and enjoyed splitting wood with his grandchildren. He loved country music and gathering with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Marie Reeves.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Geraldine “Deanie” Goins Inman; sons, Ronald “Tootie” Belton (Dana) and Jeff “Jippy” Inman (Brenda); daughters, Leslie Purdy (Mike), Heather Inman and Kayla Inman (Rodney); brothers, John David Inman and Leroy Inman (Nova); sisters, Peggy Richards, Lena Mae Bowman, Margaret Taylor (Ronnie) and Betty Ruth Shively (Jerry); grandchildren, Steven Belton, Chelsey Inman, Brooke Purdy, Montana Inman, Cassie Inman, Dakota Hall, Cheyenne Inman and Brystal Johnson; great-grandchild, Melana Alley; step-grandchildren, Grayson Scott, Brandon Hylton, Kandis Hylton and Joseph Epperson; many honorary children and grandchildren; special friends, Judy Johnson and Matt Goins and beloved pet, Little Man.

William “Bill” Dexter Inscore, age 69, died Sunday, December 25, 2016, at Genesis Nursing Home in Sparta, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on March 7, 1947 and was a son of the late John Dexter and Waneta Gray Inscore. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Jacqueline Hiatt and Helen Scott; and by brothers, Donald Inscore and Bobby Inscore.
Surviving are one sister-in-law, Linda Inscore; two nephews and a niece.

Michael Anthony Jennings, 60, of Cana, died Thursday, December 29, 2016, at his home.
He was born April 17, 1956 in Patrick County and was a son of the late James Franklin and Mary Eaton Jennings. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Carolyn Strait Jennings, and a sister Brenda McMillian.
Surviving are daughters, Theresa France, Ann Poindexter, and Tina Ayers; one son, Michael Bowman, one brother, Donald Jennings; as well as seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Hubert Isaac Jones, age 92, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at Fork Mountain Adult Rest Home in Rocky Mount.
He was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1924 and was a son of the late Henry and Susan Hatcher Jones. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, Lottie Jones, Lora Elgin, Pearl Walker, Sally Berry, Irene Martin and Merlie Hall; and two brothers, Noel and Henry Jones.
He was a longtime member of Elamsville Church of God of Prophecy, and had retired from J.P. Stevens with 33 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Esther Bryant Jones of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and John Cabler of Greensboro, N.C., Carolyn and Michael “Johnny” Turner of Bassett and Rita and Bobby Shively of Martinsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Judy Jones of Stuart; five grandchildren, Jennifer Daw, Beverly Turner, Julie Turner, Jeremy Jones and Robert Shively; and three great-grandchildren.

Steven Edward Lavender, age 68, of Ridgeway, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
He was born in Spartanburg, S.C., on February 24, 1948 to the late Robert E. Lee Lavender and Sara Bentley Lavender.
He faithfully served in country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was an honorary member of Trinity Friends Church in Martinsville. He retired from the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock after 32 years of service. Steven was a loving husband, good neighbor and friend.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 31 years, Dolly Sue Lavender of the home; two stepdaughters, Jeannette L. Peters and husband James of Virginia Beach and Denise A. Hutton and husband Dave of Hampton; five grandchildren, Brian Starling, Nicole Starling, James Peters, Christopher Shaner, and Amanda Shaner; and a step-great granddaughter, Tia Morning.

Mary Clark Martin, 90, of Bassett, died Saturday, December 31, 2016, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on February 26, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Rufus Jack Clark and Bessie Morrison Clark. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Fred B. Martin; her son, Michael Fred Martin; siblings, Claude Clark, Kester Clark, Lillie Cooley, Dorothy Chaney, Gladys Chaney, Ercell Terrell, Rufus Clark and Lonie Foster.
She retired from DuPont in 1986 after working for 38 years. She was a dedicated caregiver to her husband 18 years before his death. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for 63 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Whitehead of Bassett; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary E. Mumpower, 75, of Stuart, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at her home.
She was born in Saint Paul on May 29, 1941 and was a daughter of the late Robert Woodrow and Lola Ennis Little. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Mumpower Sr.; a son, Franklin Mumpower Jr.; son-in-law, Edward Roberts; sisters, Pauline Harless, Shirley Paris and Hazel Simmons; brother, Romey Gene Little; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Luke and Betty Mumpower.

DR. HOUSTON B. ROBERSON
Dr. Houston Bryan Roberson departed this life December 21, 2016, at Vanderbilt Medical Center, Nashville, Tenn.
Dr. Roberson was born in Roanoke on March 29, 1958 and was a son of the late Ralph and Madelene Roberson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Mitchell W. Tatum.
He leaves to cherish his memories a brother, Elder Dr. Larry D. Tatum (Iris), Cleveland, Oh., four sisters, Elaine Thomas (Charlie) and Rev. Sheila Thomas (Albert), both of Stuart, and Teresa K. Roberson and Dr. Olivia R. Givens (Kem), both of Charlotte, N.C; and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as many dear colleagues and friends.
Dr. Roberson was a 1976 graduate of Patrick County High School. He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in history from Wake Forest University, and a bachelor of arts, magna cum laude from Mars Hill University.
He was a history professor at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., for 20 years. He had also written several books.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at Patrick County High School.

CHARLIE H. THOMAS
Charlie Harry Thomas, 79 of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday evening, December 21, 2016, at Central Continuing Care.
He was born in Patrick County on March 12, 1937 and was a son of the late Charlie Oscar Thomas and Dora Green Thomas. He was also preceded in death by a son, Camet Dean Thomas; two brothers and five sisters.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are wife of 56 years, Wyomma “Toni” Jones Thomas of the home; one son, Oscar Ray Thomas of Cana; three daughters, Bertha Williams of Cana, Dora May Casstevens of Mount Airy, and Wyomma “Sissy” Surratt of Lambsburg; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
There was celebration of life on Saturday December 24, 2016, at Country Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Davis and Ewell Bernon officiating.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Woltz Hospice Home and the staff of Central Continuing Care for the love and compassion shown to him during his illness.

LLOYD A. TURNER
Lloyd Andrew Turner, 84, a treasured husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 23, 2016.
He was born in Spencer on July 6, 1932 to the late Samuel and Lucy Turner. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest Turner, Hosea Turner, and Melvin Turner; and his sisters, Alvie Foley, Roberta Mills, Verna Mae Brim, and Barbara Clark.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann Jarrett Turner; daughters, Teresa Adams and son-in-law Jim Adams, Wanda Adams and son-in-law Jerry Adams, and Sandra Murphy and son-in-law Mike Murphy; granddaughters, Monica Hatchett and her husband Robert, Michelle Klisiewecz and her husband Chris, Nicole Adams, Kayla Dishon and her husband Nick, and Rachel Murphy; great-grandchildren, William Hatchett, Anna Hatchett, Mya Klisiewecz, Kate Dishon, and Juliette Dishon; and his brother, Herman Turner and sister-in-law, Lois Turner.
He attended Spencer Penn High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He served his country as a sergeant in the Air Force stationed in Colorado, Texas, the Aleutian Islands, Utah, and Nevada. A retiree of West Window Corporation, Turner had a passion for gardening. He was a member of Stella Christian Church and served the congregation there as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and missions treasurer.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Stella Christian Church with Steve Hayes and James Nester officiating. Burial was in the Stella Christian Church cemetery with military rites by Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
