LILLIE AGNEW
Lillie Agnew, 89, of Patrick Springs, died on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, with family at her side.
She was born March 22, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Wheeler Helms and Dollie Radford Helms. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ophus Agnew; a son, Hugh Elvin McGrady; two daughters, Carol Ann Bowman and Kathleen Ingham; four sisters, Eunice Clemmons, Goldie Woodall, Irene Gardan and Dollie Susan Helms; and nine brothers, Julian Helms, J.D. Helms, Clyde Helms, Elmer Helms, Hobart Helms, Guy Helms, Willard Helms and Delmar Helms and Joe Jones.
She was a member Patrick Springs Christian Church and worked as a stay-at-home mom and baby sitting. She was also former president of Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 7800 in Patrick Springs.
Surviving are three daughters, Frances Baliles of Ridgeway, Cheryl Handy of Patrick Springs, Tootsie Soyars of Patrick Springs.; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and three special care givers, Sandra Hughes, Rhonda Craig and Donna Dalton.
The funeral was held Saturday at Norris Funeral Services in Stuart with Pastor Walter Thorton and Minister Gray Sands officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart.

MARY E. BOWMAN
Mary Elizabeth “Granny” Bowman, age 99, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017.
She was born in Patrick County on October 29, 1917 to the late Joe and Sally Beth Pack Bowman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Parsons Bowman; two sons, Winfred Bowman and Richard Bowman; two daughters, Christine Martin and Laura Wright; a grandson, Jamie Bowman; and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Lennie “Ann” Swayze, Ola Bowman and Lucille Bowman, all of Stuart; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donnie and Carla Bowman of Stuart and Willie Bowman of Tampa, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Booker Bowman of Rockingham, N.C., and Jessie Bowman of Tampa; two sons-in-law, Clinton Martin of Collinsville and Doug Wright of Lincolnton, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor J.R. Vipperman officiating. Burial was in Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

RICHARD L. COCKRAM
Richard Leon Cockram, age 59, of Bassett, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Henry County on August 18,1957 to the late Euodias Cockram and Revie Deal Cockram.
He was a computer programmer for Bassett Industries and most recently a LPN at Morehead Hospital in Eden, N.C.
Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Teresa and Randy Wagoner of Bassett, Debra and James Perdue of Bassett, one brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Velma Cockram; numerous nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Donnie Reeves of Bassett.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Danny Gilley officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

JAIME FERNANDEZ
Jaime Fernández, 75, of Meadows of Dan, died on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Pioneer Community Hospital.
He was born on April 26, 1941 to the late Noemi Frausto and Arnulfo Fernández Sr., in Agujitas, Sabinas, Coahuila, Mexico. The family migrated to the U.S. in 1955 as farmworkers, first arriving in Dousman, Wisc., then DesPlaines, Ill, and eventually settling in Chicago. Jaime and Cirila (Lucy) Rojas met and married in 1959 and had three children. In 1964, Jaime joined International Harvester in Melrose Park, Ill., working as a welder and later machinist, and was a lifelong member of the United Auto Workers. In 1972 the family moved to Addison, Ill., to be near several of Jaime’s siblings. He was passionate about sports, in his younger years encouraging his brothers and children to participate, especially in karate, in which he became very skilled, earning a third degree black belt. Throughout his life, he was a deeply spiritual man, devoted to family, offering an open heart and home, and providing all manner of support to both family and friends in times of need. After his retirement from International Harvester-Navistar in 2003, Jaime and his wife moved to Meadows of Dan in 2004, enjoying the beautiful countryside, gardening, and visits with family and friends. There the couple attended the Risen Lord Catholic Church in Stuart. Surviving are his wife, Cirila Fernández; three sons, James Fernández of Algonquin, Ill.; Edward J. Fernández of Calabasas, Calif.; and Raúl Fernández of Chicago, Ill.; five sisters, Raquel Fernández, Magdalena Mesa, Hilda Maldonado, Rosa María Fernández, Dora O. Hernández; four brothers, Ezequiel Fernández, José Luís Fernández, Arnulfo Fernández Jr., Hector Fernández; and seven grandchildren, Jesse Fernández, Sandra Ferrell, Edward Fernandez Jr., Chantel Fernández, Maya Fernández, Ria Fernández and Valentina Fernández. The family will receive friends at Humes Funeral Home, 320 W. Lake St. in Addison, Ill., on Thursday, January 26, from 3 to 9 p.m. and at Norris Funeral Home, 129 Howell Lane in Stuart on Sunday, January 29 from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral and burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday January 29 at Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart. LINDA B. HAYNES
Linda Brammer Haynes, age 56, of Woolwine, went home to be with her Lord on January 21, 2017, at her home after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Martinsville to the late Ethel Harman Brammer and Daniel Lester Brammer on June 11, 1960.
She graduated in 1978 from Martinsville High School. She worked at VF Inc for 24 years, Goodwill of the Valley in Bassett, and the Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart before becoming disabled.
She loved playing the autoharp and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Cascade and attended Sycamore Baptist Church. She also had a great love for animals.
Surviving are her loving and caring husband, Billy Lee Haynes of the home; one sister, Rhonda K. Brammer and husband Rodney McCloud of Martinsville; one stepdaughter, Shannon Haynes of Bassett; one stepson, Brent Haynes and wife Dayna of Forest; four stepgrandchildren, Teagan Johnson, Trenton Haynes, Parker Haynes, and Ethan Haynes.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Melton and Pastor Reggie Steele officiating. Burial will follow in the Harman Homestead Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

CURTIS H. MARION
Curtis Hoover Marion, 88, of Dobson, N.C., passed away Wednesday January 18, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.
He was born in Surry County, N.C., on September 19, 1928 to the late Roscoe Henry Marion and Auta Jane Carico Marion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey Mosley Marion; three sisters, Myrtle Marion, Arlene Agnes Marion Goins, and Callie Edith Marion Mayes; and three brothers, Paul Ashby Marion, Emmett Marion, and Roy Marion.
He was a retired electrician from Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News and he also proudly served in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Colleen Marion (formally Colleen Hutchins); a son, Timothy Curtis Marion; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Arthur McJunkin; a granddaughter, Joanna Lee McJunkin Kelley; two great-grandchildren, John Paul Jones II, and Samantha Audrey Thompson; a great-great-grandchild, Annalisa Audrey Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., on Saturday January 21, 2017. Burial was at Skyline Memory Garden with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019 as well as Masonic Rites by Stuart Masonic Lodge #224 AF & AM.

HESTER P. SCOTT
Hester Penn Scott, 55, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at her home in Martinsville.
She was born on August 6, 1961, in Danbury, N.C., to the late Russell Penn and the late Alverta Hylton Penn. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Louise Carolina, Helen Niblett and Ronnie Penn; and brothers, Troy Penn, Herman Penn and Corbet Penn.
She was of the Christian faith and attended Patrick County High School. She had worked at Bassett/Walker Knitting Mill.
She is survived by her daughter, Sommer Scott of Martinsville; sons, Lamar Scott of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Justin Scott of Houston, Tex.; a stepson, Malik Jenkins of New Jersey; sister, Susan Hairston of Martinsville, brother, Bailey Penn of Martinsville; and three grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sunday at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Brad Wilson officiating. Burial was private.

ELLEN C. SIMS
Ellen C. Sims, 104, of Collinsville, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
She was born in Patrick County. on May 5, 1912 and was a daughter of the late Thomas Lewis Cassell and Laura H. Cassell. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Hubert Carter; her second husband, James A. Sims; two sons, Curtis Carter and Hersel Carter; five sisters, Ada Coffer, Susie Coffer, Gladys Mitchell, Viola Wigington, and Lillian Spencer; five brothers, Russell Cassell, Woodrow Cassell, Tommy Cassell, Herbert Cassell and Calvin Cassell; and one grandchild, Gary Wayne Carter.
She lived most of her life in Henry County, residing the last 65 years in Collinsville.
She will always be remembered for the way she loved to work in the church when she was able..
Surviving are her son, Clarence Carter of Oak Level; daughters, Frances Nunn of Bassett and Shirley Harris of Collinsville; a daughter-in-law, Helen Carter of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Friday at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with the Revs. Marla Moore and Janet McGhee officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.

CAROL J. SMART
Carol Jean Smart, age 64, of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Stanleytown Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bassett.
She was born on May 29, 1952 in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late Verna Lee Scott and Lucy Walton Scott. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gaither Scott and Larry Scott.
She had been a security guard at Primland Resort.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Willie Jr. and Janet Smart and Shawn and Victoria Smart, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Stacie and Dan Bolt of Willis and Sheila Smart of Collinsville; two grandchildren, Christian Bolt and Miranda Bolt; one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Kim Scott of Moneta; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Sheppard of Spencer, Brenda and Steve Hughes of Stuart, Nancy Grant of Kansas and Reva and Timmy White of Thaxton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jonathan Goins officiating. Burial was in the Bowman-Scott Family Cemetery.

JACQUELINE M. STEGALL
Jacqueline “Jackie” Marie Stegall, 89, of Collinsville, died Friday, January 13, 2017, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on September 22, 1927, to her beloved mother, Flora Belle Shelton Hall, and father, Turner Clayton “Jack” Hall, who died before she was born. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Leonard Ernest Hall; sisters Pauline Estelle Turner, Violet Hall Padgett, and Lucinda “Tessie” Hall Philpott; and daughter Jessica Lynn Stegall Wren.
She met her husband, Jesse Ben Stegall “Jr.” on a blind date in 1937 They were married from 1938 until Junior passed away in 2011. They were known as outstanding dancers, and won many prizes for their dancing skills.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Claire Marie Goodson, of Dallas, Tex.
The funeral was held Friday at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
BLANCHE P. WOOD
On January 19, 2017, Blanche Revere Pratt Wood slipped from the bonds of this earth and is now in the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born on April 16, 1925, in Floyd, to George E. and Ursula Pratt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harless; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Joe Belcher; and brothers and sisters-in-laws: George “Junior” and Ardena Pratt; and Shirley and Lydia Pratt.
She married the love of her life, Harless Lincoln Wood, on December 22, 1949. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
She took great pride in her sons, Gary and Noel, and later loved spending time with her granddaughter, Kaitlyn, and great-grandson, Carter.
Throughout her life, she had a strong work ethic. She began working at the Canning Factory in Floyd when she was only 14 years old. After her sons began school, she worked for many years for National Park Concessions at Mabry Mill and Rocky Knob Cabins where she enjoyed working with many special friends and meeting many travelers along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
She was a strong Christian lady; she joined Harris Chapel United Methodist Church in 1935 and held the honor of being the church’s oldest member. She assisted with many church projects and served as church treasurer for many years.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Karen Linenkugel Wood, and Noel and Rhonda Catron Wood, all of Floyd; one granddaughter and spouse, Kaitlyn and Scott Loghry, and one great-grandson, Carter Alan Loghry, of Port Angeles, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Claudine Wood of Meadows of Dan, and Lillian Belcher of Woolwine; many nieces and nephews, and lifelong special friends and neighbors, Evona Helms and Lavoy Bray.
The family extends sincere appreciation to her many family and friends, as well as the dedicated caregivers and neighbors at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Hillsville and Heritage Hall—Laurel Meadows in Laurel Fork.
The funeral service was held on Sunday at Harris Chapel United Methodist Church, 3711 Conner Grove Road, Willis. Burial was in Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery, 3639 Mountain View Road, Meadows of Dan.
