OTIS J. CAVINESS
Otis James Caviness, 83, of Patrick Springs, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 26, 1933 to the late Savannah Shockley Caviness and Frank Caviness. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Barbour Caviness; a sister, and three brothers.
He served in the United States Army and saw battle during the Korean War. He was an active member of the Salem United Methodist Church and was involved in the Men’s Sunday school, the Men’s Emmaus Group and the Salem United Methodist Church Fisherman’s Club.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his yard and traveling. He owned and operated Caviness Trucking, Inc. until his retirement.
He is survived by a daughter, Teresa Gail Caviness of Richmond; sons, Ronald James Caviness and wife Pana and Christopher Lee Caviness, all of Patrick Springs; one brother, Joe Caviness; and three grandchildren, Samantha Caviness, Brooklynn Caviness, and Nicholas Caviness.
The funeral service was held Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church with Pastor John Franklin officiating. Burial was in Critz Baptist Church cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

BELLE CHANEY
Belle Chaney, age 82, of Stuart, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection.
She was born in Patrick County on May 2, 1934 and was a daughter of the late Lewis Steven Chaney and Ella Parker Chaney. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond, Roscoe, Amon, Henry and Tom Chaney; and four sisters, Ollie, Mae, Lena and Dora Chaney.
She was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one sister-in-law, Lera Everine Chaney of Stuart; nine nieces; and three nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at Union Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Mark Terry officiating. Burial was in the Chaney Family Cemetery.

R. KENNON CLARK
Ralph “Kennon” Clark, age 82, of Stuart, passed away Friday, February 10, 2017, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on June 6, 1934 to the late Ralph Garland Clark and Hattie Sue Clark.
He graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School in 1954 and attended Patrick Henry Community College and the University of Virginia. He was a charter member of Russell Creek Ruritan Club and was a member of the Stuart Rotary Club.
He was instrumental in organizing many of the volunteer fire departments in Patrick County and helped organize the first active “Hot Shot” firefighter group. He had been a member of New Hope United Methodist Church since 1954. He retired from the Virginia Department of Forestry with 40 years of service with 35 of those years as a chief forest warden. He was a loving husband, daddy, and granddaddy.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ruby Vernon Clark of the home; two daughters, Sandra Clark Sanders and husband Duane Sloan of Greensboro, N.C., and Sharon Clark Tatum and husband Wesley of Stuart; two grandchildren, Cassandra Elizabeth Tatum and Cameron Patrick Tatum; and his special caregivers, Lynda White, Mary Lee Hunt, Tisice Blankenship, and Kim Johnson.
Funeral services were held Monday at New Hope United Methodist Church with Pastors Tammy Franklin and Tommy Shepherd officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Barbara Gail Massey Collins, age 53, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on March 7, 1963. She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Jim” Collins, and a son, William “Rusty” Collins.
She had been a CNA and was a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Dawna Hubbard of Jacksonville, Ark.; her parents, Clyde A. and Hazel Scott Massey of Stuart; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Doug Morris, Deborah Hubbard, and Angie and Eddie Cockerham, all of Stuart; four nieces, three nephews, three great-nieces and three great-nephews; and a special friend, Tim Daniels of Fieldale. A memorial service will be held today (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Richard Dodson officiating. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth Jean Collins Corns, 86 of Lowgap, N.C., died Saturday morning February 11, 2017, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born on August 5, 1930 in Patrick County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Henry Corns; and by her siblings.
She was retired from the evergreen business and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her sister, Lucille Collins Robinson; several nieces and nephews; and by a special friend, Norma Lowe Crouse.
A graveside service was conducted Monday at Peter’s Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Lawsonville by the Rev. Bill Spurlin.

Mary Annice Hill Hall, age 90, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born on Nov. 13, 1926 to the late Jesse E. Hill and Henrietta Dollarhite Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Clyde Hall; four sisters, Marie Goad, Edith “Teeny” Hudson, Iva Hubbard, Marcella Hill; six brothers, Hobert, Glover, Benton, Vernon, George, and Millard “Buster Hill; and a great grandson, Chase Conner. Annice was a longtime member of Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church and had retired from J.P. Stevens.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ed Belcher of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Jane Hall of Stuart; five grandchildren, Ricky Hall, Bryan Hall, Melissa Dorsett, Johnny Belcher, Miranda Lawson; seven great grandchildren, Tyler Hall, Sydnee Hall, Caitlyn Hall, Drayke Dorsett, Deagyn Dorsett, David Larry Lawson III, Chloe Belle Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.

Jonathan “Jon” Wesley Hopkins, 45, of Martinsville and formerly of Patrick County, died on Friday, February 10, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Elizabeth Joyce Hopkins.
He is survived by his father, Ernest Donald “Don” Hopkins of Martinsville; sister, Lisa Hopkins of Martinsville; uncles, Clyde Hopkins, Elwood Hopkins, Lowell Hopkins, Paul Hopkins, and Donald Joyce; and many loving cousins.
He was a poet and authored the book “200 Poems.”

Danny Allen Keen, age 32, of Rocky Mount, passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on Sept. 23, 1984. Danny was preceded in death by his biological mother, Kay Goard Hammond; a sister, Amber Renee Keen; his maternal grandfather, Wayne Perdue; and two aunts, Ruth Coleman and Rosa Ann Justice. Danny loved his family, hunting, and gardening. He was a member of Harvest Worship Center.
Surviving are his wife, Jessica Kinney Keen of the home; three sons, Justin, Andrew, and Hunter Keen of the home; his parents, Danny David and Lisa Perdue Keen of Patrick Springs; one sister, Donna Joanna Keen Harbour and husband, Mark of Woolwine; his maternal grandmother, Stella Spence Perdue of Stuart; his paternal grandparents, Creed and Betty Deskins Keen of Henry; special nephew, Johnathan Harbour; several Aunts, Uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews; and his best friend, Travis Stanley. John Shirley Koger, 85, of Martinsville, died Saturday, February 11, 2017.
He was born May 5, 1932 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Lee Lawrence and Elvira Penn Koger. He was also preceded in death by his wife, America Hylton Koger; two sons, Edward Leon Koger and John Andrew Koger; three sisters, Florence Johnson, Ernestine Clark and Eldean Scales; and four brothers, Sanford Koger, Ruboyd Koger, Eugene Koger and Elbert Koger.
Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Davis; one son, Lawrence (Patsy) Koger; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church with the Rev. Junior Wimbush officiating. Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Mt. Nebo Cemetery.

Billy Jefferson Nelson Sr., age 87, of Elkin, NC, formerly of Spencer, Virginia, passed away on Friday February 10, 2017 at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. He was born in Patrick Co. Va. on February 16, 1929 to the late Willie Everette Nelson and the late Mary J. Tudor Nelson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Ann Turner Nelson. Mr. Nelson was the owner and operator Old Well Market and Café in Spencer, Virginia, upon retirement he worked at Gordon Trent Golf Course, and attended Old Well Christian Church in Spencer, Virginia, and was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean conflict. Surviving is his son and daughter-in-law BJ Nelson and Kimberly Nelson of Elkin; two granddaughters Afton Nelson and Larkyn Nelson; one sister Hazel Patterson; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday February 18, 2017 at Old Well Christian Church with full Military Honors around the flag pole at Old Well Christian Church, by Patrick County Memorial Honor Guard. Herbert L. Plaster, 68, of Axton, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at his residence.
He was born in Patrick Springs on June 5, 1948 and was a son of the late Clarence W. Plaster and the late Dessa Turner Plaster.
He attended New Life Community Church in Ridgeway.
Surviving are his wife, Becky Plaster; daughter, Ginger Hines; one grandchild; stepdaughter, Donna Wolfe; sisters, Betty B. Rakes and Rita P. Griffin; brothers, W. Franklin Plaster and G. Harold Plaster.

Michael Stafford Rea, 72, of Patrick Springs, died Friday, February 10, 2017.
He was born December 11, 1944 and was a son of the late William S. Rea and Florence Rea Spencer.
He had worked for Fieldcrest Cannon.
He is survived by five sons, Chris, Joel, Michael II, Joseph and David Cox and Scotty Upchurch; one sister, Debra Meurs; one brother, Sonny Spencer; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Monday at Community Baptist Church.

Orea Lawless Scott, age 84, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on April 21, 1932 and was a daughter of the late Tommy Lee and Belle Lackey Lawless. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Scott; four sisters, Verna Lawson, Claire Lawson, Vada Compton and Ola Stone; and a brother, Irvin Lawless.
She was a longtime member of Elamsville Church of God of Prophecy where she was a missionary leader, a Sunday school teacher, and member of the choir. She was a loving wife, mother, granny, sister, aunt and friend. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, James Edward and Vera Scott of Stuart; two grandchildren, Amy Elizabeth Hensley and husband Don and Jamie Leigh Scott and wife Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren; Taylor Holleman and husband Justin, Spencer Hensley, Mason, Madison, Mariah, Millicent and Maddox Scott; three step-great-grandchildren, Caleb, Chloe and Riley Hostetter; one brother, Ray Lee Lawless of Ridgeway; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. JIMMY C. STAMEY
SGM Ret. Jimmy Carl Stamey age 75m of Stuart, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 10, 2017, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in North Carolina on February 15, 1941 to the late Mary A. Honeycutt and James R. Stamey.
He began his military service in 1958, rising to the rank of sergeant major. He retired in 1988 after having serving 30 years in the U.S. Army, including two tours of duty in Vietnam and many happy years stationed overseas in Europe.
After retirement he built his dream home in the beautiful rolling countryside just outside of Stuart; where he enjoyed numerous outdoor activities, including hunting and gardening. He truly enjoyed animals and treasured his family pets. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and friend.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Joy Dean Gilliam Stamey of the home; two sons, Jimmy Carl Stamey and Archer Lewis of Richmond, and Shane Helms and wife Katie of Patrick Springs; four daughters, Pam Reeves and Ralph London of Newton, N.C., Sharon Voigt and husband Wesley of Denver, N.C., Julia Dancy and husband, Bill of Smithfield, and Lisa Campbell and Charlie Vik of Chesapeake. eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
