BRIEN K. FAIN
Brien Keith Fain, age 46, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on December 12, 1971, to the late James Early Fain and Audrey Hodges Fain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Ray Fain.
Brien was best known for his old time clawhammer banjo picking and was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Ann Fain of the home; one stepdaughter, Sonya Bitz (Chris) of Alaska; one stepson, Justin Noah (Ashley) of Mount Airy, N.C.; four grandchildren: Colten and Carsen Bitz, and Landen and Liam Noah; one brother, Leon Fain (Shirlene) of Patrick Springs; nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Banjo.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 20, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor J.R. Shelton officiating. Burial was in the True Gospel Baptist Church Cemetery.

CARL I. BELCHER
Carl Issac Belcher, 80, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
He was born on September 29, 1937, to Luther and Louana Belcher. He was preceded in death by both parents; sister, Sylvia Epperly; brother, J. B. Belcher; and son-in-law, Ricky Boyd.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geneva Wood Belcher; daughter, Alicia Boyd; sons and wives, Alan and Lisa Belcher and David and Lee Ann Belcher; sister, Juanita Moore; six grandchildren, Amy and Arthur Boyd, Lori Phillips, and Malory, Isaac and Brenna Belcher; three great-grandchildren, Aiden Boyd, and Jonathan and Emily Phillips; a niece and five nephews.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, April 24, at Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church conducted by Pastor Jeff Dalton with interment in the church cemetery.
Carl loved his church, his family, bluegrass music, beagles, and horses.

JUANITA C. GILBERT
Juanita Clifton Gilbert, 91, of Stuart, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Landmark Assisted Living Center in Stuart.
She was born on May 31, 1926, in Patrick County, to the late Austin Clifton and Mattie Clifton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Martin “Bob” Gilbert; and ten brothers and sisters.
She attended and graduated from Meadows of Dan High School where she played basketball. She went on to marry the love of her life, Robert Martin “Bob” Gilbert of Stuart, in 1946.
Juanita had a successful career as a cafeteria manager at South Martinsville Elementary School and eventually at Magna Vista High School where she retired in 1991. Her love of cooking led her to win many awards and her prize-winning recipes were featured in the local newspaper. She was a long time member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sister, Nettie Clifton Turman of Floyd; sons, Jerry Gilbert (Cindy) of Surfside Beach, S.C. and Shannon Gilbert (Melanie) of Ridgeway; and her grandchildren, Amanda Gilbert Wright of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Austin Gilbert of Ridgeway.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at Norris Funeral Services with Elders Mark Terry and Paul Hopkins officiating. Visitation will be held tonight (Wednesday, April 25) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services. Burial will held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Plasters Family Cemetery in Vesta.

KITTY M. GOARD
Kitty Mae Martin Goard, age 79, of Stuart, passed away at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart on Friday, April 20, 2018.
She was born in Patrick County on February 2, 1939, to the late Joel Martin and Mary “Hazel” Corns Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Franklin Goard; and a son, Darryl Fain.
She was a member of Bouldin Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed visits from dear friends, loved her family immensely and adored her grandbabies.
She is survived by one daughter, Elva Caldwell of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Judy Mabe of Patrick Springs, and Susan Overby and Betty Smith, both of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 23, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Gary Combs officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

PAUL LOZIER
Paul Lozier, 51, of Ararat, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Queens, N.Y., on February 21, 1967.
He was a machinist for Capewell Aerial in Meadows of Dan.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Lozier of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Lozier; a son, Andrew Lozier; mother, Maria Walczyszyn Vincent; father and stepmother, Phil Lozier and Ernestina Alba Lozier; and a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Judy Lozier.
He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Paul Lozier.
A graveside service was held Saturday, April 21, at Gates Ayers Family Cemetery next to Hunters Chapel with the Rev. Billy Stegall officiating.

AMOS MARTIN
Amos Lee Martin, 88, of Stuart, passed away on April 21, 2018, at Landmark Center in Stuart after a prolonged battle with several health issues.
He was born on the banks of Goblintown Creek on September 8, 1929, to the late Charles Bishop Martin and Delilah Bryant Martin. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Austin C. “Nick” Martin and Joseph W. Martin; and a sister Hallie Martin Lawson.
He resided in the Fairystone State Park area of Patrick County for most of his life and had been active in the VFW post 7800 prior to his health issues.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Neva Sigmon Martin of the home; three children, Anita Elgin and husband Dwight and Jeffery and wife Leslie Martin, all of Woolwine, and Ronald and wife Cynthia Martin of Clemmons, N.C.; five beloved grandchildren, Joshua Martin, Bradley Martin, Casey Elgin, Ashley Martin, and Kiley Martin; and three beautiful great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Tyler Martin, LillyAnn Hope Martin, and Grayson Lee Martin.
His early life began as many men during those years as he served honorably in the United States Army from 1951-1952 including a stint in Germany. After his tenure in the Army, he worked at several jobs locally until he found his true career passion at Philpott Dam-Corps of Engineers in Bassett. He always enjoyed his job with the Corps of Engineer and set an example for his family with tremendous work ethic.
During those years, he became a diehard “Ford Man” as he proudly drove a Ford to work almost every day. Ultimately he retired from the Corps of Engineer after a distinguished 42-year career. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, working in his yard, and watching Dale Jarrett behind the wheel of the #88 Robert Yates UPS Ford Taurus and then Carl Edwards piloting the #99 Roush Fenway Office Depot Ford Fusion until health issues ultimately forced him to the garage area.
There will be a visitation beginning at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, April 25) at Bassett Funeral Service. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Ross Harbour United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.

CLYDE N. SUTPHIN
Clyde Norman Sutphin, age 60, of Stuart, passed away at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
He was born in Patrick County on August 15, 1957, to the late Marvin King Sutphin and Bessie Mae Bowman Sutphin.
He is survived by his children, Timothy Norman Sutphin of Patrick Springs, and Laura Sutphin and Joseph Smith, both of Stuart; grandchildren, Caleb Sutphin, Abbigale Lawrence and Jacob Hughes; brothers, William Sutphin of Eden, N.C., Glen Sutphin of Mount Airy, N.C., and John Wayne Sutphin of Stuart; a special cousin who was as close as a brother, Tommy E. Massey of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on Monday, April 23, at the cemetery located on Sal Hooker Hollow Road in Claudville.

ALONZA L. YATES
Alonza Lee Yates, age 84, of Patrick Springs, passed away at his home on April 22, 2018.
He was born in Spray, N.C., on May 18, 1933, to the late Homer Lee Yates and Henrietta Hylton Yates.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and retired from Martin Processing after more than 25 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Alice Hatcher Yates of the home; one sister, Betty Yates of Floyd; two sons, Warren Lee Yates of Stuart and Michael W. Yates of Tennessee; one daughter, Deborah Y. Foley of Patrick Springs; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

DANIEL V. TURNER
Daniel Vanious “DV” Turner Jr., 92, of Bassett, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on January 30, 1926, to the late Daniel V. Turner Sr. and the late Bessie Spencer Turner. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jackson L. Turner and wife Bertha; a sister-in-law, Nellie Turner and three foster brothers, Arthur Bryant, Raymond Bryant and Charlie Bryant.
He was proud to be a World War II veteran, joining the army on March 20, 1944. He trained in Ft. Sill, Okla., and served in Kyoto, Japan until his honorable discharge on May 1, 1946. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.
After he returned home, he married his sweetheart, Hattie Frances Martin on December 8, 1950. He was employed by E.I. Dupont in Martinsville for 38 years as a mechanic and union representative until his retirement.
DV loved his church, Blackberry Baptist Church, which he joined in 1952.
There, he happily served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and respected leader for many years. He loved to read his Bible, hunt and fish, tend his garden and yard and could often be seen spending time with his “grandbabies and great-grandbabies. He loved sitting in front of his house, watching the traffic go by and waving at neighbors.
He was a loyal member of the Stanleytown “Hardee’s Bunch”. He never met a stranger, was always smiling, laughing or playing jokes on people, was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hattie M. Turner; two sons, Timothy Daniel Turner of Bassett and Roger Lee Turner and wife Cheryl of Richmond; daughter, Rebecca Ann Turner Cloldfelter and husband Steve of Bassett; five grandchildren, Miranda Jane Turner, Jennifer Frances Bailey and husband Stephen, Elizabeth Ann Hall and Chris Nichols, Morgan Leigh Moran and husband Patrick, Garrett Reed Turner; three great-grandchildren, Molly Turner, Gwyneth Bailey and Tamara Bailey; one brother, W. Earnest Turner and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, April 25) at Blackberry Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
