Barry Alan Cassell, age 49, of Charlotte, N.C., and formerly of Meadows of Dan, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017.
He was born in Roanoke on November 27, 1967 to the late Donnie Lester Cassell and Norma Harrell Cassell.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Meredith Cassell of Charlotte; a niece, Elisabeth C. Banks and husband Carey of Waxhaw, N.C.; several cousins and extended family members.
A graveside service was held Saturday at the Plaster Family Cemetery in Vesta. Pastor Michael Shockley officiated.

Lillie Wilson Dalton, 106, of Patrick Springs, died on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
She was born on November 26, 1910 to the late Mary Gilley and Walter Wilson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; Roy Dalton, one brother and two sisters.She was of the Methodist faith, worked in the textile industry as a sewer and was one of the oldest citizens of Patrick County. Surviving are one daughter, Sarah Dalton Robertson of Patrick Springs; one sister, Ellen Dull of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren, Neil Robertson and Mark Robertson and wife Natalie; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Robertson, Carter Robertson and Alana Robertson.The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday April 5) at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Stuart with the Rev. David Schill officiating. HERBERT H. GAMMONS
Herbert H. Gammons, age 83, of Ararat, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on October 7, 1933 to the late James Jesse Gammons and Susie Ada Goins Gammons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, David Lee Gammons, William James Gammons, Blaine Gammons and Frank Gammons; and a niece, Lisa Gammons.
He was of the Baptist faith.He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Winfield and Elaine Gammons of Stuart; and a sister, Ruby Layman of Stuart; three nephews, Mark Gammons, Garry Layman and Mike Layman; a niece, Debbie Taylor; a step-nephew, Ronnie Newman; three great-nephews, Robert Layman, Nicholas Layman and Matthew Taylor; and three great-nieces, Allison Gammons, Kallie Layman and Bethany Owen.Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Heath officiating. Burial will follow in Hills Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

LARRY P. HORTON
Larry Phil Horton, 73, of Mount Airy, N.C., died at his home Saturday, April 1, 2017.
He was born in Patrick County on May 22, 1943 to the late Orbra and Bessie Pack Horton. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jennifer Horton; an infant sister, and a brother, Allen Horton.
He was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rita Ann Puckett Horton of the home; two sons, Allen Horton of Claudville and Stephen Horton of Oxford, N.C.; two stepsons, Brandon McHone and Ben McHone; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Hayden and Connie Woods, both of Mount Airy, Jeanette Lundy of Mountain City, Tenn., and Imener Peyton of Stuart; and brothers, Dale Horton of Ararat, Noel Horton and Maynard Horton, both of Claudville.
Funeral services were held Monday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Zane Fishel officiating. A private interment will follow at a later time.

Clanton Lamar Howell, 82, of Stuart, died on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born November 15, 1934 and was a son of the late Grace Rorrer and Harry Pleasant Howell Sr. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, Margaret Howell Hopkins, Mildred Howell, Madeline Howell Smith, Maxine Howell Ferguson, Mabel Howell Fulcher and Mary Howell; one infant sister, Marie Howell; five brothers, Wade Howell, Herman “Wimpy” Howell, H.P. Howell, Jr., Garland Howell, and James B Howell Sr. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Stuart and worked as a fixer at the J.P. Stevens Woolwine plant for 46 years and enjoyed Nascar, camping with his grandchildren and spending time at the family farm.Surviving are his wife, Nancy Cooper Howell of the home, one daughter, Kimberly J. Howell of Stuart; one son, Lamar Howell and wife Lena F. Howell of Stuart; three grandsons, Christopher B. Howell, Jonathan “Blake” Howell and Grayson L. Howell; three brothers, Gordon Howell of Vesta, Leon B. Howell of Stuart, and Ralph D Howell Sr. of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; his special dogchild Holly, two cats, Willie and Tommy; and granddogs Zach and Dixie Howell.The funeral was held Sunday at Grace Baptist Church in Stuart with Pastor Mark Elkins officiating. PAUL G. LAYMAN
Paul G. Layman, age 77, of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on August 4, 1939 and was a son of the late Posey and Emma Martin Layman. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Stowe and Gladys Trent, and two infant brothers.
He had served in the United States Army, was a member of Wayside Baptist Church, and had retired from Rubber Thread-Easthampton Plant with over 43 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ruby Gammons Layman of the
home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Chris Layman and Garry Layman, all of Stuart; six grandchildren, Kevin, Jeffery, Michael, Robert, Nicholas and Kallie; and two sisters, Pearl Handy and Beatrice West, both of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 2, at Moody
Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors Mickey Rogers, Mike McPeak and David Heath officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard. Burial was private.

James Spotswood “Spot” Ray, age 95, of Stuart, passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Lawsonville, N.C., on December 28, 1921 to the late Eugene Ray and Lula Martin Ray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Nowlin Ray; a daughter, Linda Joyce; two brothers, Paul Ray and Fred Ray; and a sister, Laura Tufts.
He had been a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church for over 60 years. He was a Duke basketball fan and an Atlanta Braves baseball fan. He enjoyed raising tomatoes and was known as the Tomato Man/Mater Man. He also enjoyed sitting on the deck at Smith Mountain Lake.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Willie Mae Gray Rogers Ray of the home; his children, Judith Lynn Ray (Tim) Morton of Kernersville, N.C.; Richard Rogers of Stuart; Beverly Rogers (Bill) Morten of Winston-Salem, N.C., Kathy Rogers Perkins (Mike) of Clemmons, N.C.; grandchildren, Will Morten (fiancée, Jessica), Chase Morten (fiancée, Mary Chandler), Joe Perkins (Ali), Carrie Denny, Holly Lewis (Justin); great-grandchildren, Caroline Perkins, Tessa Lewis, Joshua Lewis, A.J. Lewis, Madison Denny; brother, Jack Ray (Sherri) of Texas; sisters, Rachel Gray (Edward) of Lawsonville, N.C., Lorraine Formato of Asheville, N.C. , Ann Mooney (Brian) of Hendersonville, N.C.; Ruth Stephens of Texas and Dorothy Lackey of Tacoma, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille Collins Robertson, 81, of Martinsville, died Monday, March 27, 2017, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Patrick County on July 17, 1935 and was a daughter of the late Frank Collins and Annie Willard Collins. She was also preceded in death by four sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence Robertson.
The funeral will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at Spring Street Baptist Church, Martinsville, with Pastor Nick McCorqundale officiating. Burial will follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park.

Taylo Dean Shelton, age 69, of Stuart, passed away March 22, 2017 at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on June 28, 1947 to the late Taylo Shelton and Ruth Cook Shelton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Holt Shelton.
Surviving are a son, Andrew Shelton of Fairview Heights, Ill.; two grandchildren, Drew and Nathan Shelton; and many loving in-laws.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor Tommy Nichols officiating. Burial will be private.
