OTHELLO ARRINGTON
Othello Arrington, 95, of Bassett, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
He was born on March 5, 1922, in Franklin County and was a son of the late Sam B. Arrington and the late Pearlie Trent Arrington. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Zelma Hudson Arrington; sisters Nancy Cassell, infant Beatrice Arrington, Annette Wall and Myrtle Elliot; and brothers, Edward Arrington, Earnest Arrington, Sidney Arrington and Glenwood Arrington.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for 64 years where he served as trustee, assistant treasurer, usher and assistant Sunday school superintendent.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Margaret Grant Arrington; one son, Roger Dale Arrington of Williamsport, Pa.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Maurice Arrington of Bassett and Gilbert Arrington of Winston Salem, N.C.; sister, Gloria Lynch of Kernersville, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral was held Saturday, December 9, at Bassett Funeral Service. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
MABEL S. BARBER
Mabel Isabel Stanley Barber, 85, of Martinsville, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at her home.
She was born February 16, 1932, in Carroll County to the late Everett L. Stanley and Irene A. Turman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Culler and Helen Burnette.
She was a member of Calvary Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Walter A. Barber of the home; daughters, Doris J. McDaniel and husband Doyle and Jacqueline B. Scaffidi and husband Michael, all of Martinsville; one sister, Avagene Terry and husband Melvin of Carroll County; one brother, Sherman Stanley of Carroll County; brother-in-law, Arlie Burnette of Ridgeway; and grandchildren, Chelsey Holland and husband Eric, Chase McDaniel, Sean Scaffidi, and Joseph Scaffidi and girlfriend April Viers.
A funeral service was held Sunday, December 10, at Rich Acres Christian Church with Minister Tim Hunt officiating. Burial was in Dan View Cemetery in Eden, N.C.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory of Martinsville.
MILDRED B. BATEMAN
Mildred Opal Bowman Bateman, age 92, of Ararat, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Patrick County on May 2, 1925, to Dewey Lee and Martha Ann Hall Bowman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Harry Bateman; grandsons, Danny Bateman and Alan Love; a son-in-law, Gary Kirkman; sisters, Rose Annie Haymore, Gladys Boyd and Marie Bowman; and a brother, Rev. John D. Bowman.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and dear friend. She had many wonderful talents including tenderly caring for the plants and flowers at Lee’s Greenery, quilting, crocheting, and sewing, but most of all she loved and enjoyed her family.
Among the many who will always cherish her memory are daughters and a sons-in-law, Judy Wilson, Carolyn and David Woodruff, Lavonda Kirkman, Mildred “Mickie” and Keith Martin, and Martha Sharon Bateman; sons and a daughter-in-law, Lonnie Bateman, and Lee and Susie Bateman; grandchildren, Lonnie “Randy” Bateman Jr., Craig Bateman, Justin Kirkman, Kevin King, Angie Williams, and Christina Silvers; 11 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Dowdy and Frances Tobler; and a brother, Rev. Homer Bowman.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 14, at Doe Run Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Homer Bowman and Lonnie Bateman Jr.
The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home one hour prior to leaving for the service at 1:30 p.m.

ELSIE G. BOWMAN
Elsie Mae Gwynn Bowman, age 85, of Ararat, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, December 7, 2017. She was surrounded by her entire family.
She was born February 20, 1932, in Patrick County to the late Levi and Rachel Hall Gwynn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Morris Clifton Bowman; an infant daughter, Carol Ann; her sisters, Ella Marshall and Effie Bowman; and brothers, Curtis, Willard, John, and infant Woodrow Gwynn.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She retired after more than 20 years from Renfro Hosiery Mills and then retired a second time from Brown Wooten Mills. She was the true matriarch of her family and spent her entire life serving them. Her joys included gardening, mowing her yard, cooking, her award-winning canning, and walks across the creek.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Debbie Bowman, her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Lynn Watson; grandchildren and spouses, Tracie Hawks (Chris), Michael Leftwich (Jessica), Ashly Lancaster (Justin), and Haley Bowman; great-grandchildren, Chandler and Carson Hawks, Braeton, Kase and Garrett Leftwich, Calvin and Caleb Lancaster; and a sister, Exie Evans.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 11, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., by the Rev. John Bowman. Burial was in the Bowman family cemetery.
The family would like to express special thanks to Northern Hospital ICU staff for the wonderful care given to her.
BOBBY G. DOSS
Bobby Gene Doss, 81, of Collinsville, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Sovah Health-Martinsville.
He was born August 14, 1936, in Patrick County to the late Roy Mays Doss and Naomi Biggs Doss. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Adkins; and brother, Carson Doss.
He was a member of Fort Trial Christian Church. He served in the National Guard and retired from E.I. DuPont.
He is survived by his wife, Eveadelle Doss; daughters, Susan Sigmon and husband Randy of Collinsville and Jennifer Willets and husband Jason of Tega Cay, S.C.; and grandchildren, Emily Sigmon, Dylan Sigmon, Trevor Willets, and Dearon Willets.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, December 13) at Fort Trail Christian Church with Lee Ashley and Milford Witt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service at Roselawn Burial Park.

PHYLLIS S. HANCHEY
Phyllis Scott Hanchey, age 75, of Stuart, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at Sovah Health in Martinsville.
She was born in Patrick County on June 12, 1942, to the late Luther Scott and Annice Foley Scott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Synan; and a brother, Brewster Scott.
She was a lifelong member of Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Albert L. Hanchey of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Hanchey of Stuart and Esther H. and Gregory Davidson of Williamsburg; three grandchildren, Isaac, Jaley, and Maggie Davidson; one sister, Elaine Scott of Rocky Mount; brothers Elliott Scott of Penhook, Cecil Scott, Greene L. “Deenie” Scott, Wilbur Scott, Richard Scott, and Arnold Scott, all of Stuart; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 14, at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Kenneth Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the Scott Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

GEORGIA H. HANDY
Georgia Hazelwood Handy, 90, of Bassett Forks, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017.
She was the widow of Clarence Handy whom she shared a life for 53 years.
Born in Stuart, she was the daughter of the late Tim and Lilla Hazelwood. Ten brothers and sisters preceded her in death. One sister, Kitty Johnson (Wally) of Richmond survives her.
She is also survived by her son, Tim Handy and his wife Donna of Goode; grandchildren, Justin (Mariya) Handy of Charlotte, N.C., and Kristin Handy of Lynchburg; a great-grandchild, Claire Elise Handy; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a long-time member of Pocahontas Baptist Church. For many years she worked at Harder’s Drug Store in Bassett.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 14, at 11 a.m. at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.

Fred Allen Scales, 66, of Ridgeway, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at his residence.
He was born September 5, 1951, in Virginia to the late George Henry Scales and Eva Mae Reynolds.
He is survived by his mother, Eva Mae Reynolds of Patrick Springs; four daughters, Tonya Wimbush and Evon Scales, both of Collinsville, and Kizzie Oliver and Kimberly Graves, both of Martinsville; two sons, Fred Scales Jr. of Martinsville and George Scales of Columbus, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; four sisters, Nellie Johnson of Whiteville, N.C., Janice Hairston of Ridgeway, Edna Preston of Greensboro, N.C., and Phyllis Hilton of Handover, Md.; and two brothers, Richard Scales of Ridgeway and David Scales of Temple Hills, Md.
Fred attended Antioch Baptist Church, Ridgeway Primitive Baptist Church and New Bethel Progressive Primitive Baptist Church and was disabled.
The funeral service will be held today (Wednesday, December 13) at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Matthews Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson Family Cemetery in Ridgeway.

PATSY A. TILLEY
Patsy Ann Tilley, 65, of Collinsville, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at her daughter’s residence.
She was born on April 28, 1952, in Martinsville and was a daughter of the late Alvin Carl Crawford and the late Elma Christine Bryant Crawford. She was also preceded in death by one grandchild.
She was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Roger Dale Tilley; sons, Rodney Dale Tilley of Martinsville and Christopher Randolph Tilley of Collinsville; daughters, Cynthia Dawn Littles and husband Jimmy of Martinsville and Jackey Ann Richards and husband Ronnie of Collinsville; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Randy Carl Crawford and wife Marie of Stokesdale, N.C., and Jackie Eugene Crawford and wife Kimberley of Patrick Springs; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 14 in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 15 in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Jeff Rhea officiating. The burial will follow the funeral service at Puckett Family Cemetery in Stuart.

Larry Julian Wade, 70, of Woolwine, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Wade; sons and daughter-in-law, Lewis Turpin, Dennis Wade and Kenneth Wade (Jessica); daughters and son-in-law, Cathy Belcher (Michael) and Vicky Turpin; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray Wade (Ann) and Jim Wade (Elaine); and one sister, Mary Lou McAlexander.
The funeral service was held Friday, December 8, at Maberry Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Turpin and the Rev. Michael Bowman officiating. Burial was in the Williams Cemetery.
