BETTY G. CARTER
Betty Grogan Carter, 79, of Tilley Drive, Fieldale, died on Monday, December 11, 2017, at her home.
She was born July 10, 1938 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late James William Grogan Sr. and the late Annie Sue Murphy Grogan. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert “Pete” “Jingles” Carter.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James R. “Randy” and Mary Jane Carter of Fieldale; one brother, James W. Grogan Jr. of Martinsville; and two grandchildren, Sommer and Troy Carter of Fieldale.
She was a member of Old Well Christian Church and attended Hill Memorial Baptist Church.
The funeral service was held Friday, December 14, at Hill Memorial Baptist Church in Martinsville. Burial was in Providence United Methodist Church cemetery in Patrick Springs.

JAMES C. HENNINGSEN
James C. Henningsen, age 74 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born on September 27, 1943 in Benton, Wisc., to the late James R. and Clara Henningsen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roger, Lyle, and Paul.
He was a contractor/builder, an active member of the community, had served as president of the Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club, volunteered with the Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department, and was loved and respected by all.
James knew the true meaning of success. He gave back to those who helped him along the way and never forgot where he came from.
He is survived by his wife Margaret of the home; one son and a daughter-in-law, Michael (Heidi); one daughter, Anita; two grandchildren, Bryce and Alexis; two sisters, Ann and Patsy; and one brother, Ken.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Shawn Carter officiating. Burial was in Meadows of Dan Baptist Church cemetery.

MAJORIE M. JONES
Majorie Mize Jones, 90, of Patrick Springs, died on Monday, December 18, 2017, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
She was born on November 20, 1927 to the late Ernest R. Mize and Ophelia MacFarland Mize. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Veril Gray Jones; a sister, Peggy Wiggington; and a brother, Herman Mize.She worked as a secretary at Karastan Service Center and attended Sycamore Baptist Church in Stuart.Surviving are one sister; Fran Mitchell of Cary, N.C., four sons; Don Jones and wife Janet of Thomasville, N.C., David Jones of Stuart, Gray Jones and wife Mary of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Gary Jones and wife Melinda of Horsepasture; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, December, 20) at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating. CORNELIUS W. KEITH
Cornelius Wayne Keith, age 81, of Stuart, passed away Friday, December 15, 2017, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.
He was born in Floyd County on May 7, 1936 and was a son of the late Una Ray Keith and Ida Ethel Boyd Keith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of Mayo Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, Gene Keith of Ararat and Larry Keith of Vesta; and his special caregivers, Pixie and Anthony Johnson of Stuart.
A graveside service was held Monday, December 18 at the Mayo Mountain Baptist Church cemetery on Dobyns Rd. with Pastor David Heath officiating. Military rites were performed by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

NEVILLE H. ROBERSON
Neville Handy Roberson, 78, of Collinsville, died on Saturday, December 16, 2017, in Rocky Mount.
Born in High Point, N.C., on April 27, 1939, she was the daughter of the late W. Edgar Handy and the late Vergie Harris Handy. Her husband was the late Gilmer C. Roberson to whom she was married for 35 years before his death on April 23, 1995.
She was a graduate of Stuart High School and the Martinsville branch of Steed College.
She was a retired state employee, having served as Clerk of Patrick County General District Court for nine years, and later a deputy treasurer of Patrick County. She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Collinsville, where she had been a former officer of the Presbyterian Women’s Circle and past church treasurer.Surviving are one daughter, Lydia Lynn Roberson of Rocky Mount; one grand-daughter, Shannon Marie Root of Bloomington, Ind.; one grandson; Eric Roberson of Bloomington; two aunts, Mrs. Phillip Handy of Lynchburg and Mrs. Ernest Handy of Philadelphia, Pa.; and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, December 27) at 2 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Stuart with the Reverend John Wiederholt officiating. GARY T. SHAW
Gary Thomas Shaw, 60, of Mount Airy, N.C., passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a long illness.
He was born in Surry County, N.C., on August 1, 1957 and was a son of the late Thomas Edger and Hazel Childress Shaw.
He was a painter and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
He is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Cooper and Wayne of Mount Airy, Melissa Jones Easter and R.C. of Ararat and Teresa Shaw of Asheville; N.C.; brothers and sister-in-law, Michael Shaw and Gaynell of Mount Airy and Sammy Shaw of Cana; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Sunday, December 17, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating.

DAVID L. WALKER SR.
David Lynn Walker Sr., age 83, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on November 26, 1934 to the late S.L. Walker and Ethel Jefferson Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Walker; and a sister, Mary Ellen Wall.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a longtime member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, Sunday school director, and sang in the choir. He also loved farming.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Dovie Hylton Walker of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David L. Walker Jr. and Debra and Dale Walker, all of Stuart; five grandchildren, Amanda Wikstrom and husband Chris, Beth Pruitt and husband Justin, Chad Slate, Whitney Trent and husband Chad and Eric Walker; four great-grandchildren, Riley Pruitt, Cooper Wikstrom, Winnie Wikstrom, Maddox Trent, and one on the way; one sister, Rosalie Walker of Stuart; and two brothers, James E. Walker and Thomas J. Walker, both of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Anderson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.
