EDWARD “EDDIE” RAY COLEMAN
Edward “Eddie” Ray Coleman, age 55, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2018, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on June 5, 1963. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Coleman; a brother, William Coleman; and a special niece, Shaunaci Knight. He had worked for Nationwide Homes and loved hunting, fishing, and Jimmy Johnson. He was a member of the Patrick County 4-H Marksman.
Surviving are his wife, Nova Lee Coleman, of the home; one son, Thomas Coleman, of the home; his mother, Verna Bonds Coleman, of Spencer; three sisters, Mary Coleman, of Spencer, Patricia Knight (Tim), of Sandy Ridge, N.C., Martha O’Neil, of High Point, N.C.; two brothers, Harold Coleman, of Spencer, Robert Coleman (Cathy), of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, in Stuart with Elder Alan Terry officiating. Burial was in the Coleman Family Cemetery. HAROLD T. COLLINS
Harold T. Collins, age 82 of Stuart, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on April 14, 1936, to the late George W. Collins and Annie Sue Hutchens Collins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Archie, Harry Lee and Fred Collins and three sisters, Inez Towe, Rachel Jefferson, and Pauline Joyce.
“Harold T.,” which is what everyone called him, worked at Stanley Chevrolet for over 50 years. He was an extremely hard worker and was known by almost everyone in Patrick County.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Leigh Dickerson Collins; two daughters, Pamela Collins Grundmann (Mike) and Leigh Anne Collins Whitlock (Wallace); four grandchildren, Tyler S. Grundmann, Carly E. Grundmann, Camden C. Whitlock and Collins L. Whitlock; numerous nieces and nephews; and special care companions, Debra V. Martin and Tara K. Scott. Our family cannot thank them enough for the special care they gave him.
Harold T. will be deeply missed by his family and those who knew him. The Celebration of Life was held Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, with the Rev. JAMES CLIFTON GRAHAM
James Clifton Graham, age 95, of Patrick Springs, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on July 18, 1923, to the late Ed Graham and Myrtle Cassell Graham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Oleen Graham; a brother, Roy Graham; and a son-in-law, Garvin Hubbard. He retired from Patrick County Public Schools where he was a school bus driver, had served in the United States Army, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Hubbard, of Patrick Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Lona Graham, of Stuart; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Drema and Dennie Joyce, Lavina Corns, Shanan and Barry Turner, Jeff and Michelle Graham, Bradley and Mary Ann Graham; Tammy and Mark Gammons; Susan and Duane Reynolds, Donna and Nigel Buist; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Dian and Larry Burnette; sister-in-law, Dorris Graham and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor David Boarman officiating. Burial was in the John Adams Cemetery. ROBERT ELBRIDGE HOPKINS
Robert Elbridge Hopkins, 88, of Martinsville, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018. He was born on October 21, 1930, in Woolwine to the late Walter Thomas Dudley Hopkins and Rosa Hubbard Hopkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Edwards Hopkins; siblings, Amos, Paul, John, and Nora Belle.
He was a member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church. He graduated from Stuart High School, served in the U.S. Air Force, and retired from E.I. DuPont.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Jean Hopkins; son, Robert “Hop” Hopkins and wife, Rhonda; grandchildren, Ryan Hopkins and Dustin Hussey and wife, Sara; great-grandchild, Harper Hussey; and sisters, Laura Edwards, Margaret Ray, Ruby Barnard, and Mildred Dodson.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Roselawn Burial Park with Dr. G.H. Vaughan officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

CARLENE JUSTICE
Shortly after sunrise on Sunday, December 2, 2018, Carlene Justice passed away peacefully at her home. A lifetime resident of Patrick County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Cephas and Lena Holt; sisters, Yvonne Soring and Kitty Sue Willard; and brothers, Jim Nash, Ray Holt, and Billy Holt. She was also especially close to her cousin, Patsy Rorrer.
Early in her life, Carlene was a charter member at Calvary Baptist Church in Patrick Springs and taught Bible lessons for children’s Sunday school. She worked hard all her life in the textile industry and retired from J.P. Stevens. Carlene was also an excellent bowler and filled the basement with championship trophies.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmie Justice; sons James Odell (Marcella) and Ken Justice (Andrea); daughter Regena Shough (James); grandchildren Cheryl Nance (John), Lori Bowman (Wayne) and was especially close to Adam Justice (Julie), Chrissy Belcher (Eddie) and great grandchildren Leland Justice and Hamp Belcher. She also was blessed with many great great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Carlene has requested a private burial with her ashes scattered among those of her sister, Yvonne. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon. BARBARA JUNE CHURCH RAKES
Barbara June Church Rakes, age 88, of Stuart, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart. She was born on November 7, 1930, in Patrick County to the late Don and Ruth Thompson Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Rakes; one daughter, Lark Eaton; one son, Tommy Rakes; one sister, Donna Ruth White; and one brother, David Church. She attended Radford Teachers College and taught at Hardin Reynolds Elementary School. She was the first female disc jockey at WHEO radio. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Patrick County Bank and later Crestar and then retired to be a caregiver for her parents. She was the activities director for the Blue Ridge Nursing Home and attended Stuart Baptist Church and New Life Community Fellowship. She was a Past Grand Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a very talented artist, a huge sports fan, and never missed her children’s games or events. She was a wonderful mother who was always full of life, laughter, and had a real zest for life.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Donny and Janet Rakes, of Stuart; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Janet Rakes, of Raleigh, N.C.; and a brother, Bill Church (John Washburn) of Greenville, Del.

ROBIN EARL SMART
Robin Earl Smart, age 71 of Stuart, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on July 24, 1947, to the late Clarence Thomas Smart and Mamie Williams Smart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Soanie, Kernie, Darst, Dillard, Nathan, and Elizie Smart; and one sister, Audrey Vernon. He faithfully served in the United States Army.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Edna Martin Smart; two daughters, Cheryl Rorrer and husband, John, and Donice Davenport and husband, Brian; five grandchildren, Heather Sizemore and husband, Adam, Scott Wingfield, Jr., Evie Davenport, Nathan Davenport, and William Davenport; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Carol Sutphin and husband, Jimmy, Gloria Martin and husband, Johnny, Emma Joy Hicks, and Gay Brown and husband, Frank; one brother, Kirby Smart and wife, Lottie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life memorial service was held on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Providence United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Vernon officiating. CLYDE MICHAEL SPENCE
Clyde Michael Spence, 78, of Brawley, Calif., passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018, at his home. He graduated in 1958 from Stuart High School in Stuart, and in 1959, graduated from National Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tenn. He cooked at various hotels and restaurants in Brawley in the 1960’s. A few years later, he was employed by the Imperial County Sheriff’s office as a kitchen supervisor and retired in 2001, after 28 years of service.
He enjoyed country music, playing the guitar, watching his grandkids play sports, spending time with family, being outdoors, gardening, cooking and baking. His favorite sports teams included the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Lakers.
He was preceded in death by his father Marvin Spence; mother, Annie Spence; brothers, JC Spence, Curtis Spence, James Spence, Clarence Spence and Herbert Spence; sisters, Evelyn Mitchell, Juanita Balas and son Clyde Spence Jr.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary Margaret Incognito, of Poway, Calif., Faye Bowman and Barbara Roberts, of Patrick County; brothers, Patrick Spence and Gary Spence, of Patrick County; wife, Jennie Spence Brawley; son, James Spence (Clara Padron-Spence), of Imperial, Calif.; daughter, Janet Spence-Ortiz (Martin Ortiz), of Imperial, Calif.; grandsons, JR Antunez, Michael Antunez, Ryan Spence, Noah Spence; granddaughters, Jazleigh Ortiz and Brea Spence and numerous nieces and nephews.
The service was officiated by Pastor Dennis Freeman on Saturday, December 1, 2018, in Calif. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery, located at 4700 Hovley Rd. Brawley, Calif.
