ALVIN WILLIAM BEASLEY
Alvin William Beasley, age 93 of Westfield, N.C., passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C. He was born in Stokes County on June 29, 1925, to the late Alvis V. Beasley and Elsie Dunkley Beasley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Alvis Beasley; his daughter, Kathy Dawn Beasley; and one sister, Thelma George.
He faithfully served in the United States Army during World War II. He, alongside his wife, owned and operated Beasley’s Garage on Collinstown Road. He was a wonderful husband, loving father, and proudly served his community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lovis Harman Beasley of the home and many dear friends in their community.
Funeral services were be held on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Collinstown Presbyterian Church and burial was in the church cemetery. Military Rites were provided by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart was entrusted with the arrangements. VERNON EUGENE BELCHER
Vernon Eugene Belcher, age 86, of Woolwine, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart. He was born on Nov. 24, 1931, to the late Wesley Belcher and Lelia Wood Belcher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eulah Mae Conner Belcher.
He served in the U.S. Army and attended Life Tabernacle Church. He loved bluegrass gospel music, playing the banjo, and tending to his apple orchard.
Surviving are a son, Roy Belcher, of Stuart; two brothers, Kenneth Belcher, of Floyd, Odell Belcher, of Meadows of Dan; a brother-in-law, Landis Conner and wife, Bertha, of Woolwine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, with the Rev. Harold Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. DELICE MAE (HANDY) BLADES
Delcie Mae Blades, age 91, of Falls Church, passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 7, 2018, peacefully in her home. She was born on February 17, 1927, in Meadows of Dan, to the late D. Lee Handy and Callie Mae Handy.
She grew up in Meadows of Dan, moving to Washington, DC after high school in 1944. After arriving, she found a job at C&P Telephone Company and then she became a fingerprint analyst for the FBI for about eighteen months until the war ended. She married her husband in 1950. Over the years she worked as a telephone operator in various cities on the East Coast and in Cuba, following her husband as he pursued his career in the US Navy. In 1962, they transferred to Virginia Beach with their children until his retirement from the US Navy and death in 1970. She continued to raise her children while attending Tidewater Community College, where she received several degrees in Early Childhood Education. In 1984, she moved to Northern Virginia with her twin daughters to be near her oldest child who lived there. Over the last thirteen years, she has lived with three of her daughters and a granddaughter.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Blades, Debra Gates, Belinda Blades and Paula Blades of Alexandria; one sister, Irene Joyce (Bill) of Ridgeway; 5 grandchildren, Susan Burges (John) of Omaha, NE, Amber LaClaire of Woodruff, S.C., April Gates of Alexandria, Wilson Ryan Blades (Ann), of Sunnyvale, CA and Justin Denver Blades of California; and 2 great-grandchildren, Callie Gates and Mary LaClaire of Woodruff, S.C.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. William Robert Blades, US Navy (ret.); and her son, Weston R. Blades. Also, three sisters Myrtle Goard of Winston-Salem, N.C., Pauline Clifton of Roanoke, and Thelma Spangler of Monroe, Ohio and a brother, James Denver Handy of Eureka, Calif.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 14 at noon at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel in Roanoke, with the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke. The family will receive friends and family an hour prior to the service. EDGAR LEE BOOTH
Edgar Lee Booth, age 83, of Charity, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at his homeplace. He was born in Patrick County on December 22, 1934, to the late Claude Edgar Booth and Mamie Rakes Booth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel “Polly” Turner Booth; and seven siblings, Junior Booth, Grady Booth, Lorene B. Puckett, I.J. Booth, Ada B. Wood, Ovilla B. Bowling, and Dena B. Reynolds.
Edgar was a lifetime member of the Smith River Wildlife Club. He truly enjoyed animals of all kinds; he especially loved his dogs.
He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Booth Hall of Charity; two granddaughters, Tiffany Hall and Bethany Hall; father of the granddaughters, Steve Hall of Stuart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 9, 2018, at Charity Primitive Baptist Church with Pastors Mike Varner and Rick Randall officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers are Glenn Booth, Robert “Bubba” Chandler, Cecil Lawson, Chris Pendleton, C.W. Puckett, Thom Puckett, Rocky Reynolds, Marc Shuff, Aaron White, Glayton Wood, and Rodney Wood. LEE ELIJAH COLLINS
Lee Elijah Collins, age 99, of Stuart, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Feb. 9, 1919, in Patrick County to the late Elijah and Nannie Lawson Collins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Irene Hooker Collins; an infant daughter; a son-in-law, Wade Williams; four sisters, Marie Hooker, Lottie Gammons, Mary Lankford, Martha Brown; and three brothers, Troy, Jim, and Early Collins.
He had retired from J.P Stevens and was a farmer and cut timber. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Ervie and Lewis Stevens, of Stuart, Sue and Roy Hanks, of Stuart, Shirley and Clarence Collins, of Stuart, Linda Williams of Martinsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sue Collins of Stuart; 13 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren; 4 great great great grandchildren; a special niece, Betty Conner of Stuart; a special caregiver and his granddaughter, Gail Ramsey of Stuart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home, in Stuart, with Elder Clarence Bowman and Pastor Mark Collins officiating. Burial was in the Stateline Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
