JOE N. DEAL
Joe Noel Deal, 78, of Bassett, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born on July 28, 1938 in Patrick Springs and was a son of the late Harrison George Deal and the late Berta Spencer Deal. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Shelia Deal Cooley; and several brothers and sisters.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.
Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Bobbie Jean Hall Deal; daughter, Teresa Deal Noe and husband Tommy; son, Alan Deal; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Sammy Deal; and one sister, Hazel Gilley.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 13 in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel where a funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dwayne Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
WILLIAM R. FAIN
William Robert Fain, 72, of Fieldale, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017, at his residence.
He was born on September 20, 1944 in Patrick County to the late John Leonard Fain and the late Myrtle Dollarhite Fain. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Albert Fain and Wayne Fain ; and sisters, Dorothy Fain, Della Young and Doris Nunn.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Stoneman Fain; daughter, Lisa Webb and husband Corky; stepson, Roby Tallman; stepdaughter, Donna Brim; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; brothers, Arlice Fain and wife Kathleen, Carl Fain and wife Linda, Bruce Fain and wife Margaret, Harold Fain and wife Shirley, Burton Fain and wife Vicky and Jack Fain and wife Delphia; sisters, Ruby Sheppard and husband Joel, Judy Bowman and husband John, Linda Hill and husband Ed and Brenda Wilkey.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 12) in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel where a funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Danny Brim officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at Roselawn Burial Park.
TERRY R. McMILLIAN
Terry Ray McMillian, 61, of Mount Airy, N.C., passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 5, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born April 25, 1956, in Surry County, N.C., one of seven children born to the late Edgar and Hallie Louise Reynolds McMillian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Layla Mae McMillian; and an infant sister, Louise McMillian.
He was a member of True Vine Baptist Church in Mount Airy.
He is survived by a daughter, Cori McMillian Love of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Zach and Lena McMillian of Dobson, N.C.; three grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Joann McMillian Greer of Thomasville, N.C., Jeanette and Danny Gravely of Mount Airy, and Jilda Faye McMillian of Dobson; two brothers, Larry McMillian of Meadows of Dan, and Garry McMillian of Darlington, S.C.; many nieces and nephews; and the mother of his children, Nancy T. Haynes of Mount Airy.
The funeral service was held Sunday, July 9, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Rawley “Dink” Haynes Jr. officiating. Burial was at Skyline Memory Gardens.

BERNARD T. RAKES
Bernard Thomas Rakes, age 84, of Stuart, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on April 9, 1933 to the late Thomas Clyde Rakes and Catherine Cannady Rakes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Rakes; a brother, Norman Rakes; and a sister-in-law, Shelby Rakes.
He faithfully served his country in the Army during the Korean War, attended New Life Community Fellowship Church and had retired from United Elastic with 47 years of service. He was very civic minded and gave his time to many organizations including Mountain Home Lodge #263, Stuart Lions Club, and American Legion Post #105.
He had a great love of sports, especially the Chicago Cubs, of whom he was a self-proclaimed “World’s Biggest Fan.” He took pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play sports and rarely missed a game. He was instrumental in the foundation of Little League in Patrick County.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, papa, son, uncle, and friend who can be described as solid, hardworking, humble, and enjoyed the simple way of life.
Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara June Church Rakes of the home; his son, Donny Rakes and wife Janet of Stuart; a daughter, Lark Eaton of Patrick Springs;; a daughter-in-law, Janet Rakes of Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Rakes and wife Lucy of Bassett, Ronnie Rakes and wife Barbara of Patrick Springs, and Bobby Rakes and wife Carolyn of Powhatan; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastors Jim and Ethel Churchwell officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Stuart Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

JEFFERY D. SMITH
Jeffery Dale Smith, age 57, of Ararat, died Saturday, July 8, 2017, at his home.
He was born February 7, 1960 in Surry County, N.C., to the late Thomas Franklin Smith and Edith Hall Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Smith.
He was a retired truck driver.
He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Smith; granddaughter, Marissa Sawyers of Cana; sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Gary Willard of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Vanessa Payne of Cana; brothers and sister-in-law, Danny Smith of Cana and Darrell Smith and wife Tonya Fletcher of Mount Airy, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.

Veril Gray Jones Sr., 95, of Stuart, died on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
He was born March 20, 1922 to Fuschia Calahan and Jesse Lee Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters; Bessie Faye Jones, Jessie Mae Jones and Vivian. Minter. He worked at Fieldcrest Mills until his retirement and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the oldest member of Sycamore Baptist. Church.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Jones of Blue Ridge Therapy Connection, Stuart; four sons, Don Jones and wife Janet of Thomasville, N.C., David Jones of Stuart, Gray Jones and wife Mary of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Gary Jones and wife Melinda of Horsepasture; three sisters, Beatrice Cochran of Eden, N.C., Agnes Frye of Greensboro, N.C., and Delores Chatham of Montgomery, Ala.; one brother; Bobby Jones of Danville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 12) at Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Stuart with the Reverend Gerald Melton officiating and military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.
A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Dan View Cemetery in Eden with military rites by the Rockingham County Veterans’ Honor Guard. Guard.
