CHARLES WILLIAM BLACKARD
Charles William Blackard, age 80, of Woolwine, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on August 26, 1937, to the late Shuble Blackard and Pearl Marie Holt Blackard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Henry Blackard; one grandson, Justin Hopkins; and two brothers, J.C. Blackard and Bennie Ray Blackard. William was an Assistant Plant Manager with Bassett Walker in Patrick County and served 30 years as a Supervisor with United Elastic. He was a member of Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Haden-Blackard of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen B. Hopkins of Stuart, Lisa and John Hooker of Claudville; three step-daughters, Dorinda Clark of Woolwine, Darla Haden of Woolwine, Laura Anglin and husband, Dale of Hardy; three grandchildren, Charles Allen Blackard, Kasey Marie Blackard, Rachel Lynn Blackard; four step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and James Lawson of Stuart, Shirley and Glenn Handy of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart where Pastor Gary Combs and Brother James Percival officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens. DOROTHY BALILES SHANK
Dorothy Baliles Shank, 94 of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Lee Baliles and Emma Shelton Baliles of Stuart; her husband of 59 years, Albert Ellsworth Shank; brothers, Syrus Baliles, Curtis Baliles and Herman Baliles; and sisters, Carrie Carson and Adeleen Griffith.
Dorothy is survived by her only son, Patrick Shank of Roanoke; sister, Eva Agee of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews who love her, their Aunt Dot.
She was born on August 12, 1923, on a small farm in Patrick County near Buffalo Ridge. Dorothy loved to tell you about all the farm work she did as a child, milking cows, hoeing corn, killing chickens and walking two miles to school every day for 12 years. She was very proud to be the Valedictorian of the last class of Blue Ridge Mission School in 1941 in Woolwine, and enjoyed school reunions for many years.
After graduation Dorothy moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for The National Geographic Society and The Washington Star newspaper. She returned to Stuart in 1948 to care for her parents and helped raise future governor of Virginia, Gerald Lee Baliles and his brother, Larry Baliles. Later Dorothy moved to Roanoke to live with her sister, Eva Agee, and worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
She met Albert Shank and after a few months they were married in St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, in Roanoke, on November 29, 1952. They had almost 60 years of very happy married life until Albert’s death on September 19, 2012.
They had one son, Patrick, of whom she was very proud, and who cared for her the last years of her life.
Dorothy was an amateur artist in oil painting and ceramics and a gardener who had a green thumb. Dorothy had a real sense of style and she always looked beautiful. Dorothy and Albert enjoyed playing bridge, eating at The Roanoker Restaurant, and traveling. They made several trips to Hawaii and Europe and especially enjoyed visiting sites in Italy where Albert was stationed in World War II.
Dorothy was born a Baptist, attending Fairy Stone Baptist Church founded by her parents. In 1965, she joined the Catholic faith of her husband. Dorothy was a faithful parishioner of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and a lifelong Democrat.
The family greatly appreciates and thanks all those who cared for her during her illness and last years. The funeral service was on Friday, June 8, 2018, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church where Fr. Kevin Segerblum officiated. Burial was at St. Andrew’s Diocesan Cemetery. ANNA MAE COX FAIN
Anna Mae Cox Fain, age 82, of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C. She was born in Patrick County on February 26, 1936, to the late Dewey Coundiff Cox and Margaret Handy Cox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Homer William Fain; a sister, Thelma Graham; and three brothers, Moir, Lloyd and Frank Cox. She loved cooking, gardening, tending to her flowers, and canning fresh vegetables from the garden. She enjoyed her career as a LPN; she had a compassionate heart for those who were hurting. She was a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Fain Shelton of Stuart, and Sonya Lea Fain of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandson, Kevin Duane Shelton; three great-grandchildren, Tamara Shelton, Claira Frisco and Brittany Shelton; one great great-grandson, Hunter Kyle; one sister, Julia Gregory of Carolina Beach, N.C.; one brother, Bruce Cox of Greensboro, N. C.; several nieces and nephews; a special caregiver, Betty Gaither of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart where Elder Tim McGrady officiated. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens. RAMONA KAY WILLIAMS
Ramona Kay Williams, age 60, of Stuart, passed away Friday, June 8, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on April 27, 1958. She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Williams; her maternal grandparents, Elzideen and Ocie Alderman Thompson; and her paternal grandparents, Vance and Audrey Hopkins Williams.
Kay started her nursing career at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center and then worked for Martinsville Hospital for over 30 years where she was the Director of the Med-Surg Floor and also the head of the Donor program. She was a longtime member of Tory Creek Baptist Church, she loved to travel and she loved her God.
Surviving are her mother and step-father, Annis and Moir Goins of Stuart; one sister, Lori Williams of Stuart; one brother, Eddie Williams of Stuart; a special niece, Deena Williams of Stuart; her Aunt, Peggy Hemmings of Dobson, N.C.; and her special children and Med-Surg Staff on the 4th floor.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, where Pastors Lonnie Hylton and Kevin Combs officiated. Burial took place in the Maple Shade Cemetery.
