JAMES LEON FAIN
James Leon Fain, age 71, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart. He was born in Patrick County on December 22, 1946, to the late James Early Fain and Audrey Hodges Fain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Ray Fain and Brien Keith Fain.
Leon had retired from Nation Wide Homes. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and he loved all kinds of auto racing.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Shirlene Conner Fain of the home; one daughter, Becky Fain of Stuart; three sons, Timmy Fain and wife, Ada of Stuart, Kevin Fain of Stuart, Ronald Fain of Stuart; four grandchildren, Ben Hylton, Austin Hylton, Carley Rae Fain, Gabriela Nicole Fain; a sister-in-law, Doris Fain of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today), May 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Mark Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Patrick Memorial Gardens. FLOSSIE MARGARET “BOWMAN” HORTON
Flossie Margaret “Bowman” Horton, age 96, passed away May 10 at her daughter’s home (Erlaine) in Burkeville, where she has resided the last three years.
She was born in Patrick County to Samuel “Sammie” Armstead Bowman and Geneva “Eva” Branch Bowman on November 18, 1921.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest William Horton Sr.; three sons, James O’Neil, Donnie and David; one daughter, Janet; and five brothers and sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Erlaine and husband Frank Watkins, and Kay and husband Scott Eutsler; two sons, Bill and Rodney Horton; twenty grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bobbie, Mallie, and Ola; and one brother, Dewey.
She was raised by her grandmother, Nina, from the time she was 18 months old, after her mom died. She grew up as a tomboy climbing trees and riding them down after they were cut by her cousin, swinging on grapevines, playing with her grandmother’s pet groundhog, chasing the cow through the briars and thickets, and helping her grandmother to make socks to put on chickens so they couldn’t dig up the garden.
She went to school in Kibler Valley, at the little one room school house (that only went to seventh grade), carried the mail for a quarter per day over the mountains, kept the house and cooked for the Barnard family.
After marrying Earnest, they moved to Rising Sun, Md., during the war to work in the ammunition plant. After the war, they moved back to Patrick County, had eight children, and worked as tobacco farmers until the youngest child finished school. She then went to work at a sock factory, where she worked until she retired.
Flossie was the happiest having all her family around. She enjoyed her family, friends, church, flowers, and a good book.
Visitation with service to follow will be on Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m., at the Pack Family Cemetery. Follow Ararat Rd (731) turn on Kibler Rd (Route 648) and then Ike Slate Rd/Dr (Route 631).
SHARON DENISE PENN
Sharon Denise Penn, 50, of Martinsville, departed this life Sunday May 6, 2018, at her residence. Born in Patrick County she was the daughter of Mrs. Buelah P. Penn and the late Robert T. Penn. She was a member of Trinity Church of the Living God, for 50 years and was a 1985 graduate of Patrick County High School where she also received a Degree in Cosmetology.
In addition to her mother; she is survived by (3) brothers; Robert Andrew Penn, of Indianapolis, Ind., Troy Christopher Penn and wife (Kim), of Fisher, Ind. and Michael Eugene Penn and wife (Vanessa), of Avon, Ind.; one sister; Patricia Ann Portter, of Winston Salem, N.C. Aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister; Karen Elizabeth Tucker-Dillard.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday May 12, 2018, at the Greater International Pentecostal Holiness Church, Martinsville with Elder Frank B. Tatum was the eulogist.
Arrangements were entrusted to Hairston Funeral Home, Martinsville.
MILDRED BURNEY STANLEY
Mildred Burney Stanley, age 91, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2018. She was born September 10, 1926, in Rockingham, N.C., a daughter of the late John Edwin Walters and Maggie Mae Cox Walters.
She lived her earlier life in North Carolina and later moved to Patrick Springs. She was first married to Braxton Robert “Bob” Burney Sr., and later married Reverend Charles W. Stanley, both who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Annie Gerety; three sisters, Mary Prevatte, Nola O’Quinn, Ann Lambert; two brothers, Paul Walters and Don Walters.
She is survived by a daughter, Janice Lawson and husband, Emmett of Ridgeway; one son, Braxton Robert Burney Jr. and wife, Vickie of High Point, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Elva S. and husband, Reverend Greg Martin of Patrick Springs; four grandchildren, Emily Nelson and husband Erik, Thomas Lawson and wife Heather, Travis Burney and wife Lolly, Brooklynn and husband Reverend Wade Foster; nine great- grandchildren, Elizabeth and Catherine Nelson, Isaiah and Chloe Burney, Katie and Simon Lawson, Elyse, Valerie and Gavin Foster; and two step great-grandchildren Avery and Evan Foster. Three loving sisters-in-law, Helen Walters, Rachel Walters and Luine Brisson also survive her.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Living Waters Outreach Ministries with Reverend Veronica Venable officiating.

RONNIE WITT
Ronnie Witt, 82, of Stuart died on May 12, 2018 at Salem VA Medical Center in Salem. He was born on August 30, 1936, in Henry County to the late Charlie and Madgie Witt.
He served his country in the United States Army in Alaska. He was employed as a building contractor in the home construction industry. While not working, he enjoyed time with his dog “ Satie” and all other animals. He and his dog Satie would sit in his yard enjoying the flowers and collection of windmills.
Surviving are his daughter, Lori Griffith, of Critz; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Witt family cemetery with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Military rites were by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

EUNICE REBECCA HOLT YOUNG
Eunice Rebecca Holt Young, age 94 of Bassett, passed away at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart on May 10, 2018. She was born in Patrick County on January 24, 1924, to the late Rush Holt and Ella Wilson Holt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Clay Young; three sisters, Pearl Blackard, Jane Ray, and Dallas Hensely Pulliam; and three brothers, Moir Holt, Harry Holt, and Noel Holt.
Eunice retired from Bassett Walker with 25 years of service and was an Avon representative for 54 years until her declining health. She was a member of Pocahontas Baptist Church in Bassett. Eunice was a very happy person and enjoyed life to the fullest. She will be remembered as a loving and caring, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Surviving are one son, Ricky Young and wife, Lauren of Bassett; four grandchildren, Meredith Marie Young, Clayton Hudson Young, Michael McMillian, and Iesha McMillian; one sister, Norine Holt Buffkin of Martinsville; one brother, Jay Holt of Rocky Mount, and numerous nieces and nephews.
