SARAH M. GILBERT
Sarah Opal Martin Gilbert, age 87, of Martinsville passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017, at her home.
She was born on May 28, 1929 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late James D. Martin and Ada Barnard Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Melvin Gilbert; a son, David Mark Gilbert and a sister, Marie Martin Turman.
She was a member of Rich Acres Christian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Eastwood and Jennifer Gesinski, both of Chicago, Ill.; one son, Michael Gilbert of Stoneville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, William Clee Gilbert and Cody Joe Gilbert, both of Charlotte, N.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial was in the Wayside Community Cemetery.

RAY L. HYLTON
Ray Lee Hylton, age 58, of Bassett, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on March 9, 1959 to the late Raymond Cundiff Hylton and Claris Alma H. Hylton.
He is survived by two sisters, Virginia Nelson of Bassett and Geraldine Haynes of Stuart; two nieces, Melissa Turner of Stuart and Susan Waldan of Lynch Station; a great- niece, Samantha Ratcliffe of Stuart; and a great-nephew, Ray Wesley Hanks, Jr. of Martinsville.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Peal officiating. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

RUSSELL J. MIZE
Russell J. Mize was born in Patrick County on April 8, 1920, to the late Mollie Lackey Mize and Tony Mize. He departed this life for Heaven on Thursday, May 19, 2017.
He was a devoted Christian and a true witness for God everywhere he went.
He loved people and never met a stranger. Having lived 97+ years and raised during the Depression, he had many interesting stories and jokes that would keep a person spellbound for a long while.
He was an only son with seven sisters; six are deceased: Sadie, Bertha, Dot, Maggie, Hattie, and Minnie. One son, Lynwood Mize, is also deceased.
Russell worked at Bassett Chair factory for 14 years as a foreman. He then worked in the funeral business for over 30 years in Bassett. He was also known as “the sock man” and was a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving are his devoted wife, Katherine Morrison Mize of Stuart; one daughter, Louise Lovely of Brevard, N.C.; one sister, Ethel Lewis of Martinsville; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Mize of Ridgeway; two stepdaughters, Sylvia Plaster, and Donna Thomas of Stuart; three grandchildren, Darlene Griffin, Carol Johnston, and Linda Helms; three step-grandchildren, Dwayne Adams, Dustin Thomas, and Darren Thomas; two step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Collins Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday with Pastors Richard Dodson, Calvin Adams, and Bobby Rakes officiating. Burial was in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in the family plot.

Life can be lonely when you are on the open road. A million plus more miles traveled, he was a truck driver you know. You have logged your last journey and your family you will see, but not your Earthly family, this time it was not meant to be. We will miss you terribly, but one thing we all know, you are with Jesus, on a different kind of road.
RW Goins, age 74, passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C., on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 after a five year battle with bladder cancer.
Born on March 21, 1943, he was the second born child of Walter Robert and Myrtle Padgett Goins.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer, and as long as he was able, he loved antiquing with his wife. He loved the beach, traveling and riding his dog Buzz around the community.
RW worked for 17 years at J.P. Stevens United Elastic Plant before leaving to farm and pursue a career later as a truck driver. He retired from Roadway Express in Kernersville, N.C., after 23 years as a driver. During his career there, he logged nearly two million miles accident free.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Myrtle Goins, mother and father-in-law Bernie and Virginia Love, a son-in-law, Kadren Robertson, brothers-in-law Delmar Inman and Reverend Keith Love and life-long best friend, Gary Gray.
He is survived by a loving wife of 53 years, Alice Love Goins, daughters Valencia Robertson Bullins (Jeff) of Walnut Cove, N.C., and Teresa Allison Goins (Jo Combs) of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandsons Cody Kadren Robertson (Amanda) of Pinnacle, N.C., and Spence Taylor Robertson of Hickory, N.C.; great-grandson Noah Kadren Robertson of Pinnacle, sisters Patsy Chilton (Bernie) of Mount Airy, N.C., and Sindy Fain of Stuart; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. His loving and faithful companions Buzz and Alli will miss him greatly.
A funeral service was held Saturday at Collinstown Presbyterian Church in Westfield, N.C., where he was a member. Pastors Shaun Draughn, Barry Clement and Ricky Rogers officiated with burial in the church cemetery.
HATTIE C. PACK
Hattie Crissman Pack, age 71, of Lawsonville, N.C., passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the Universal Healthcare Center of King, N.C.
She was born in Patrick County on February 7, 1946 to the late William “Bill” Crissman and Gladys Willard Crissman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Pack; a son, Ronnie Pack; one grandson, Charlie Boyd; and a sister, Doris Pack.
Surviving are her husband, Akers Pack of the home; one daughter, Heidi Pack and fiancé, John Leach of Walnut Cove, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Oneal and Vickie Pack of Lawsonville; three grandchildren, Jacob Pack, Brittany Bowman and Randall Lawson; one great-grandchild, Addison Bowman; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Pattie and Odell Pack, Nell Crissman, and Patricia Pack all of Lawsonville; one brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Patricia Crissman of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Andy Pack officiating. Burial was in the Aaron’s Corner Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

CAROLYN C. WILLIAMS
Carolyn Caldwell Williams, 71, of Spencer, died on Friday May 19, 2017 at her home.
She was born in Henry County on March 13, 1946 to the late Willie Martin Caldwell Sr. and Mary Kate Firebaugh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother; Alton Boyd Caldwell.
She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and drove a school bus for Henry County Public Schools for many years..
Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Williams of the home; one daughter, Tamesa Williams of Spencer; one son, Jeff Williams of Mount Vernon, Ohio; two sisters, Catherine Watson of Roanoke and Connie Martin of Martinsville; two brothers, Willie Martin Caldwell Jr. of Appomatox and James E. Caldwell of Martinsville; and five grandchildren, Sam and Oliver Williams, James, Jonathan and Joshua Kolditz.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Ramsey and Pastor Ed Hartman officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Primitive Church Cemetery in Stuart.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) at Hillcrest Baptist Church and other times at the home..
