CAROLYN T. BUNKER
Carolyn Frances Thomas Bunker, age 72, of Pilot Mountain, N.C., died Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Central Continuing Care surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on August 10, 1945 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Calvin and Annie Mae Sprinkle Thomas. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Thomas Gravley; and a brother, Roger Thomas.
She was a dental assistant for over 48 years and a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Wayne Eng Bunker of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Engle and Brad Corn of Ararat, and Betsy and Scott Baird of Mount Airy, N.C.; three grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Charlie Shore of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wade and Dawn Thomas of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Friday, September 8 at Salem Baptist Church in Dobson, N.C., with the Rev. Jay Worsley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

LEONARD O. DALTON
Leonard Odell “Butch” Dalton, age 68, of Stuart, passed away Monday, September 11, 2017 at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in on July 9, 1949 to the late Charles H. Dalton and Ora Philpott Dalton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Arlene Dalton; and two brothers, Charles W. and Anthony D. Dalton.
He had retired from Hopkins Lumber and attended Shiloh Way of the Cross in Martinsville.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Refonda Thomas Dalton of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lynette and Benjamin Manns of Spencer and Kawanna Dalton of Danville; three grandchildren, Naomi Manns, Whitley Manns and Benjamin Manns Jr.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda J. Dalton of Martinsville and Shirley J. and Michael Wells of Axton; two brothers, Donald E. and Albert W. Dalton, both of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 15 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Joseph Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Patrick Memorial Gardens.
A wake will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

NANCY G. HAZELWOOD
Nancy Louise Gunter Hazelwood, age 81, of Stuart, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.
She was born on May 8, 1936 in Patrick County to the late Turner Walter Gunter and Mary Goard Gunter. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Randy D. Armstrong.
She was a member of Five Forks Wesleyan Church and was a woman of strong Christian faith who truly loved God. She enjoyed reading and sewing. She was the type of person, who no matter what was going on, always had a smile on her face. Her best medicine and greatest joy came in the form of her granddaughters and great-grandchildren; she was a loving and devoted grandma.
Surviving are her adoring husband of 58 years, Glen F. Hazelwood of the home; one daughter, Mildred Armstrong of Walnut Cove, NC; two granddaughters, Amanda Stephens (Nate) and Sara Sullivan (Derek); four great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Stephens, Bryson Stephens, Jack Stephens, and Tyler Sullivan; and loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, September 13) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor J.R. Shelton, Pastor Jeff Jeffers, and Derek Sullivan officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Five Forks Wesleyan Church cemetery.’
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the homeplace of Herman and Mary Ruth Hazelwood.

JANE H. HOLLIDAY
Jane Wright Harbour Holliday, age 77, of Stuart, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at The Blue Ridge Therapy Connection.
She was born in Patrick County on January 15, 1940 to the late Edgar R. Wright and Vera Mae Harris Wright. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Cecil Maynard Harbour and Bobby Glen Holliday; a grandson, Ethan Cole Kirkman; and sisters, Clara Lee Wright, Betty Hollandsworth, Lena Turner, and Wilma Craig.
She was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and C.L. Kirkman of Bassett; grandsons, Robert Kirkman and Caleb Kirkman; step-granddaughters, Anna Ledford and Amber Moncada; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Coy Plasters of Patrick Springs, Bonnie and Leon Hancock of Bassett, and Denzil Turner of Patrick Springs; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Pat Wright of Bassett; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 8 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastors Rick Anderson and Chad Janey officiating. Burial was in the Foley family cemetery.

WALTER J. LASLEY
Walter J. Lasley, age 88, of Stuart, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center.
He was born in Detroit, Mich., on November 13, 1928 to the late Walter Lawrence Lasley and Bertha Sloska. He was predeceased by his wife, Stephanie C. Lasley, and sister, Wanda Peters.
He was a devoted son and brother who spent his summers traveling between Tennessee to visit his father, stepmother and brothers and sisters, and to Detroit to spend time with his mother and stepfather, Ellis Sloska. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Lasley; son, Walter Lasley III and daughter-in-law Anna; grandchildren, Jacqueline, Danielle and John Lasley; sisters Darlene Parrish and Sandy Day, brothers Donald and Jerry Lasley, and many nieces and nephews.
He moved to east Tennessee at a young age where he was raised by his father, and loving stepmother, Stella Pyles.
For three years shortly after World War II, he served in the U.S. Army occupational force in Japan. He then joined the U.S. Airforce where he served for four years with distinction and fought in the Korean War; he was an airborne radio operator with the Fifth Air Force in Seoul, Korea, flew 63 combat missions, attained the rank of staff sergeant, and was awarded the Air Medal for outstanding duty.
In 1951 he married Stephanie Claire Smyrski of New Milford, Conn., and in 1952 moved to Connecticut with his wife. In Connecticut he had a career as a highly respected electronics and television technician, and for ten years was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 167, Bethel, Conn.
In 1994, he and his wife retired to Stuart where he was an active volunteer for the National Park Service at Mabry Mill where he worked caning chairs and fashioning brooms.
He was a talented golfer and marksman, enjoyed reading, gardening, playing guitar, studying Biblical archeology canoeing, camping, and was an authority on wilderness survival techniques.

KEVIN W. PAULEY
Kevin Wayne Pauley, 42, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Sovah-Martinsville.
He was born on July 8, 1975 in Patrick County to Margaret Pauley Saunders and Roger Lee Saunders.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving, in addition to his mother and father, are his uncle, Russel Pauley of Wytheville; and one aunt, Kathy Easter of Wytheville.
A graveside service was held Friday, September 8 at Henry Memorial Park with Pastor Jeff Gravely officiating.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services Inc. and Crematory, Martinsville.
WAYNE E. PRUITT
Wayne Edward Pruitt, age 81, of Pinnacle, N.C., died Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Universal Healthcare of King, N.C., surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Patrick County on July 19, 1936 and was a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Minnie Fulk Pruitt. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Allen and Irene Jessup; and a brother, Morris Pruitt
He was a retired fixer from Armtex Hosiery, after 45 years of service and was a member of Pinnacle View Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Allie Mae Baker Pruitt; one son, Jeffrey Pruitt; one daughter, Robin Bowman; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Madeline Kirkman; two brothers, Joe Horace Pruitt and Stewart Pruitt; and several special nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday, September 9, at Pinnacle View Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Chamblin.

JOHN H. RAKES
John Henry Rakes, 83, of 8th Street, Altavista, died Friday, September 8, 2017, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was the husband of Betty Ferguson Rakes for 56 years.
He was born November 23, 1933 in Stuart, a son of the late Taft Rakes, Lottie Mae Castle Rakes and stepmother, Gracie May Dalton Rakes. He was also preceded in death by a son, John Anthony Rakes; a sister, Lucille Craig; and a brother, Thomas “Tommy” Rakes Jr.
He was a retired truck driver, U>S. Navy veteran that loved woodworking, fishing and NASCAR.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Joseph Harbour Rakes and his wife Pamela of Vinton; three daughters, Juanita Hudson and her husband Buddy of Altavista, Lorraine Simmons and her husband Terry of Moneta and Rebecca Deeds of Vinton; two brothers, Clyde Rakes and his wife Phoebe of Kernersville, N.C. and Garry Rakes of Strasburg; two sisters, Betty Dalton and her husband Elmer of Gibsonville, N.C. and Virginia Gunter of Stuart; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, September 12, at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista, by the Rev. Adam McDaniel with military honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36 and Gretna Post 232.

Helen Scott Shelor, 86, of Dublin, died Wednesday, September 6, 2017.
She was born September 29, 1930, in McDowell County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Judson and Lilly Scott.
She was a member of Dublin United Methodist Church and worked alongside her late husband, Paul Clifford Shelor, in general contracting for Debusk and Shelor, Inc. which continued as Shelor, Inc. until 2009.
She is survived by her loving children, Jesse Shelor and his wife Cathie of Roanoke, Susan Shelor Deck of Stephens City, Rev. Don Shelor and his wife Terri of Dublin, and Patrick Shelor of Dublin; grandchildren, Joseph Deck, Bradley Deck, Katie Shelor, Beth Shelor, and Logan Shelor; and many other relatives and friends.
Her family would like to thank her special caregivers, Martha Davis, Mary Ann Harris, and Emily Wesley, for their kind and loving care.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 10 at the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Hanshew officiating. A graveside service was held Monday at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church cemetery.

ROBERT J. THOMAS
Robert Jacob “Jake” Thomas, 43, of Patrick Springs, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.
He was born in Martinsville on April 7, 1974 to the late Robert “Baxter” Thomas and Ellen Gay Sigmon Thomas of Collinsville.
He attended Fieldale Baptist Church and was a member of Fieldale Fire Department since 1992. He had graduated from Fieldale-Collinsville High School, class of 1992 and He had been the maintenance supervisor for five years with Quikrete.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Misty Poindexter Thomas of the home; three sons, Skyler, Bentley and Hunter Thomas of the home; one daughter, Sara Thomas of the home; one brother, Teddy Thomas of Stanleytown; and two sisters, Susan Cochran of Greensboro, N.C., and Linda (George) Powers of Collinsville.
A memorial service was held Friday, September 8 at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Harrison and David Deisher officiating the service.

SHEENA G. WORLEY
Sheena Gayle Worley, age 30, of Stuart, Virginia passed away at her home on Monday, September 4, 2017.
She was born on January 31, 1987 in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Overton O. Lilly, Jr. and Anna Elizabeth Simpson Lilly; and her paternal grandparents, Robert P. Worley and Mary Ellen Jenks Worley.
She had worked for The Results Company in Stuart for 10 years and was a very dedicated and hardworking employee. She enjoyed working puzzles, was considered a mathematical genius, and loved everything fantasy, especially fairies. She was an avid reader, particularly Manga graphic novels. Sheena had a great passion for everything she gave her time to; she had a true love of animals, a childlike spirit, and was deeply devoted to her family.
She is survived by her parents, Michael Worley and Martha Gayle Lilly Worley of Patrick Springs; one sister and brother-in-law, Falon and Josh Sturgill of Roanoke; and her beloved cats, Phoenix and Fury.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 14, at 3 p.m. at Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church with Pastor Gary Combs officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
