ANNE P. ADKINS
Anne Pruitt Adkins, 86, of Bassett, died Monday, May 22, 2017, at Stanleytown Rehab Center.
She was born September 10, 1930 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Will Pruitt and the late Pencie Dunkley Pruitt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bobby D. Adkins; four brothers; and four sisters.
She retired from Bassett Furniture Industries in 2007.
She is survived by three children, Clyde “Danny” Adkins, David Lee Adkins and Mary A. Beacham; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Kenzie Penland; and one brother, Harvey L. Pruitt.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, September 10, at 1 p.m. at the Philpott Lake Dam Park shelter.
Arrangements are by Bassett Funeral Services.
JOE B. SLATE
Joe Bill Slate, 77, of Mount Airy, N.C., passed away Friday afternoon, September 1, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born December 13, 1939, in Surry County, N.C., one of six children born to the late Ernest Willie and Maggie Elizabeth Callahan Slate. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rachel Sawyers and Naomi Slate; and three brothers, Jimmy Lee Slate, Gary Slate, and Larry Slate.
He was a longtime tobacco farmer, and was a member of Flippin Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Kathy Sykes Slate of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Lori Slate of York, Pa., and the Rev. Darren and Tammy Slate of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Jo Slate of Claudville, and Opal Slate of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Jack Sawyers of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.
A service of worship and celebration of his life was held Monday, September 4, at the Slate home (backyard), with the Rev. Darren Slate officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; Westview Baptist Church, c/o Ronald Busick, 304 Fish Lake Road, Cana, VA 24317; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
STAFFORD O. WIGGINGTON
Stafford O’Neil Wiggington, 84, of Bassett, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Stanleytown Health and Rehab.
He was born March 26, 1933 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Shuble and Lovinia Haley Wiggington.
He was a U. S. Army veteran and had been a mason since 1955. He attended New Life Baptist Church and was loved by his family and friends.
He is survived by five sons, Ricky Wiggington and wife Rita, Wayne Ray and wife Susan, Brian Wiggington and wife Pat, Marty Wiggington and wife Charlotte, and Andy Wiggington and wife Laurie; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Shelby Gilley and Betty Hancock; and one brother, Junior Wiggington.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service. Burial will be in the County Line Church of God of Prophecy cemetery in Bassett.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday, September 6) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett.
