Patrick deputies and emergency medical first responders responded to a call Tuesday involving an alleged gunshot victim, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.
Upon arrival at a residence on Union Church Road in Ferrum, Melissa Atkins Hale, 45, was found. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was subsequently airlifted to Roanoke Carillion Medical Center.
An investigation by the sheriff’s office determined that the victim was allegedly accidentally shot by her husband, Daniel Steven Hale, 46, of the same address.
Daniel Hale was charged with misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm and released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
Melissa Hale is in stable condition and is expected to recover, Smith said of the incident investigated by Jason Kruse and Lt. Steve Austin.
