Andrew Overby and Terry Dalton were the big winners in two of the local races on Tuesday.
Overby easily beat Steve Ferring to emerge as the winner in the race for the Dan River District seat on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors.
According to unofficial results, Overby received 1,411 votes to Ferring’s 272 votes.
“I’m excited to get to work and get Patrick County on a better path,” Overby said, thanking his supporters.
Dalton faced Rebecca Adcock and Jeff Houchins in the three-way contest to serve as the Mayor of the Town of Stuart. Dalton received 223 votes, while Adcock received 148 votes and Houchins received 123 votes.
“I’m extremely excited, honored, and thankful that the voters supported me. I really appreciate it,” said Dalton. “I am extremely humbled and appreciate the votes.”
He explained that he will now select the vice-mayor, while the council interviews candidates for an open vacancy on the town council.
“We’re going to have a town council seat available,” Dalton said, adding that anyone who is interested is encouraged to contact the town office. The council will interview in January to fill the vacancy.
Dave Hoback and Erica Wade also won their reelection bids for the Stuart town council, with 305 votes cast for Hoback, and 287 for Wade, according to unofficial results.
In the race for the 9th Congressional District, Morgan Griffith, incumbent, prevailed in his bid against challenger and Floyd democrat Karen Baker. Griffith, R-Salem, pulled ahead early on, and by 8:30 p.m., Baker conceded the race.
Griffith received more than 73 percent of the votes cast by press time to Baker’s 26.41 percent in the same time frame, unofficial results suggested.
“I look forward to continuing to be a conservative voice in Washington for the people of the 9th Congressional District, and I really appreciate the mandate they gave me this evening,” Griffith said.
Also at press time, incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Richmond, appeared to edge out his challenger Hung Cao, with an unofficial 52.02 percent of the vote for Kaine and 47.78 percent for Cao.
Donald Trump garnished nearly 80 percent of the local vote in his bid against Vice President Kamala Harris’ 19.38 percent, according to unofficial results.
