Alleghany visited Patrick County High School to play the Lady Cougars on October 15, and left with a 3-0 win, 18-25, 19-25, 20-25.
Patrick County started the match strong, building a 7-2 lead in the first set with solid play in all parts of the game. Forced to take a timeout, Alleghany responded and tied the set at 12-12.
“As soon as you let a team get the momentum, it’s really hard to stop it. You need to keep the momentum on your side, and we had it at 7-2, and they slowly started taking it,” said PCHS head coach Heidi Moore. “The timeout helped them. They got motivated, and we started playing really slow, making little errors that we’ve got to clean up.”
It was Alleghany’s ability to string together points that made the difference in the latter part of the set, taking it 18-25.
The second set was close in the early game. After an 8-8 tie, Alleghany would go on a 12-4 run and pull ahead 12-20. Patrick County would finish strong with a 7-5 run, but ran out of time, losing the set 19-25.
The third set was close nearly throughout, with the teams trading points for a 16-16 tie. Once again, Alleghany would string together points, taking an 18-20 lead and finishing the set 20-25.
“We were on and off too much tonight,” said Moore. “It’s getting to be the end of the season, and we can’t have those times.”
Jayden Callahan’s 9 kills and 4 digs led Patrick County, with Lilly Hazelwood adding 8 kills and 2 blocks. Camille Gonzalez had 23 assists and 6 digs. Journey Moore had 12 digs and 3 aces.
